The Unit was contacted by the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday the 27th of September. The Pierce County Sheriff had received a cell phone call from two horseback riders in the Greenwater area. From the garbled transmission it was determined that one or both of the subjects were injured. The Sheriff asked for Mountain Rescue Volunteers to search for the lost horsemen. Two members responded; they were: Ken Capron and Rick Wire. They were asked to meet at the Greenwater Fire Station as soon as possible. After stopping by the Cache for the rescue truck, they arrived at the fire station to learn that both subjects were found and they were walking out on their own. Both returned to the Cache in time to participate in that night's board meeting.

Report provided by Tom Miner, Pierce County Sheriffs Deputy

We went up on Thursday with 4 divers, 1 SAR coordinator, 4 Mt Rescue and 2 ESAR/TMRU members. We met Skagit at the Texaco and they had one Mt Rescue member. They also brought their food unit and comm van to support us.

We decided to go with the mission despite having such a low turnout from the volunteers. I needed the divers and they had a training day on Thursday so I got them for 8 hours at regular time vs many overtime hours on the weekend.

We reached the girders and sent out three divers with TMRU swiftwater in support positions. They searched the girders to about a 90% POD. We found a kayak paddle, probably his. This is the red item I saw from the air when we scouted it in September.

If he was there we feel that the force of the water has dismembered him. The wood and other debris in those girders was so mangled from the pressure of water straining through the steel beams that a human body in the same position would not survive intact for long.

Skagit is satisfied and will not be doing any further searching pending any new evidence or leads. They were very appreciative of our efforts.

William Jackson BUTLER passed away peacefully, in his sleep, on October 2, 2000. Mr. Butler was best known by the affectionate names of "Butler", "Bill", "Jackson", "Uncle Bill", and even "Uncle Willie". For those who knew him from reading about him in newspapers, books and even the TV show "This is Your Life," he was known as the hero and legend of Mount Rainier who repeatedly risked his life to save those of others. He was also known by anyone that ever met him as the gentleman who was always there. Bill was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he graduated from McCallie with honors, including a gold medal. He also attended college at Washington State College in Pullman. His childhood dream was to go to Alaska, and at the age of 21, his father grubstaked him for the journey. When his train stopped in Seattle, he saw Mt. Rainier, and set out on foot for "The Mountain". There, Bill became a Mountain Guide and finally a National Park Ranger. He met Martha Botten there, where they fell in love and married. They were at The Mountain as Ranger, Mother and Father to Billy Butler, and as Uncle Bill to the neighborhood children, and the many children who would stay with Bill and Martha for the summers. Bill Butler was best known to the public as the person who, after a long search, located the wreckage of an airplane that crashed into the mountain. It was his passion that kept him searching, even evenings and weekends, and it was his compassion that kindled his relationship with many of the families and friends of the Marines who lost their lives in the crash. The Butlers retired near Olympia, on the Puget Sound, where they built their home. Martha Butler passed away in 1970. Bill later married Audrey, and they were together at Butler Gulch until she passed away in 1988. Bill Butler is survived by 100's of friends, nieces and nephews. In his work, he served as a gentle guardian to nature and as a rescuer for those in trouble. He earned the love and respect of all he met, everyday, and he was everyone's great friend and to many their "Uncle Bill". We love you Uncle Bill, and we will carry you in our hearts forever. Bill Butler left the message, for anyone wishing to make a donation, please give to the American Cancer Society, or the ALS foundation.
