Sea Kayaking in Sweden

Our sea kayaking was a guided trip through the outfitter Crossing Latitudes .  This was an inn trip - Summer Solstice Paddling Sweden.  Instead of camping, we stayed at Tofta Gård, a traditional farm dating from the 1700's, and did day trips.  The food was wonderful, both at Tofta Gård and while paddling.

When the owner of Tofta Gård died in 1850, he left the farm to be run as a public trust to benefit poor sailors and farmers.  Today the main buildings serve as a youth hostel and restaurant.  We stayed in a building that was built in 1804 as a cook house for farm hands.  The main hall with the dining room was built in 1774.

The last afternoon of our trip, we took a ferry to Gullholmen Island to participate in the island's traditional Swedish Midsummer Festival.  That evening, we went to a Midsummer dance at an outdoor pavilion near Tofta G
ård, where we danced swing, waltz, fox trot and the twist to a band playing oldies from the United States.

Saturday & Sunday, June 19-20:

We flew to Göteborg and checked into the Hotel Eggers in time to do some sightseeing before our evening meeting with our sea kayaking guides Ulrika and Pernilla.

We ate breakfast at the Hotel Eggers and then went by taxi to Tofta Gård on Orust Island.  We got settled in our rooms and had a light lunch, then walked to Orust Kayak on the sea shore to get our kayaks and other equipment.  We took a short afternoon paddle to a grassy shore where we had our second lunch.  We headed back for dinner and sleep to recover from jet lag.

We paddled three miles to Gullholmen Island.  After eating lunch, we took a walking tour of the island including touring the house and shop of an old ship captain and his family, now turned into the Skepparhuset (Captain's House) museum.  Following that, we paddled home for supper.
