At Home in Whitefish Montana:

Marion Lake
An ice covered Marion Lake; the end of June 2008

Williwaw, Cape Dory 28

Sunset in Arcadia Michigan, September 21, 2001

In case you are wondering, Kim picked up the name "Williwaw" while serving with the Navy in Alaska where it referred to a sudden wind roaring out of the mountains. Since that time we have seen this reference in writings about sailing in the higher latitudes, from Alaska to Patagonia. In our case the wind has blown us from the Great Lakes, back into the mountains of Montana, thus the Mountain Lion.

We sailed Williwaw out of Waukegan Illinois for 12 years before moving her to Racine Wisconsin. In the summer of 2000 we cruised to the North Channel of Lake Huron and then in 2001, Lake Superior. Here are some photos of those trips.

wil-li-waw n:

  • A violent gust of cold wind blowing seaward from a mountainous coast.
  • A sudden wind that blows out of the mountains.
