This ancient breed of dog has protected Mongol camps since before
the time of
Chinggis Khaan. Marco Polo wrote about Banhar and even aquired one, wanting to
take it back home. He wrote: "They have in this province a large breed of
dogs, so fierce and bold that two of them together will attack a lion. Every
man who goes on a journey takes with him a couple of these dogs. When a lion
appears they have at him with great boldness, and the lion turns on them, but
can't touch them for they are very deft at eschewing his blows".
