Game of the Week

  Objective:

The object of this game is the same as in any standard game of chess. Capture your opponent's king before you lose your own.

  The Game:

Originally released on the PC, this gem of a game has a step above the rest in the animation. Rather than static pieces moving across the board, these pieces walk, complete with sound effects.

Whenever two pieces meet, they travel to another plane to do battle.

The animations test the limit of Nintendo's notorious censors: for example, when the pawn nails the knight in the cajones, or the king stips naked for the queen.

What makes the game even more fun, is that in the sub-menu (hit [SELECT]) you can access the board set-up and really go to town. In the following example, I gave myself all queens and rooks, while my opponent has all knights an pawns:

  Summary:

This is by far my favorite chess simulator for the NES. With multiple difficulty levels and the ability to change the pieces and setup, this game also has a high replay value. The game's only downfall is no music and less than mediocre sound effects. I suppose that's why I keep a CD player by my NES...
