Creswell, Oregon
Lane County USA Located in the Southern Willamette Valley near the Coast Fork Willamette River. Exit 182 on I-5 between Eugene and Cottage Grove. N43-55.92 W123-00.40 One mile south west of Creswell-Hobby Airport (77S)(100LL) Population approx. 3840. For centuries Calapooia Indians gathered their dietary staple, camas bulbs from Camas Swale, around 1800 fur trappers started camping in the area. Permanent Euorpean settlement began around 1850. Creswell was named after John Creswell (Port Deposit, MD birthplace) U.S. Postmaster general in 1873 by Ben Holladay of OCR railroad, incorporated 1909. Until the mid 1970's Creswell was primarily a wood products center, today it is more diversified. More information at WIKIPEDIA. Water and sewer is provided by the city. There are two city parks, two acre Holt Park near downtown and 33 acre Garden Lake Park on the east side of the I5 freeway. Agriculture
At the turn of the century Creswell was promoted as "Fruit Lands" with some acerage planted and sold as fruit orchards. The primary commercial orchards today are filbert. Grass seed production is the main use of agricultural land in the area. There is some cattle, dairy, poultry, and sheep production on a commercial level. Many types of berries grow well due to the mild climate. |
