While in Uniform:
By Chuck "Transport" Casada

Last month the subject of BEARING was introduced. This is how you act both in uniform and out. Please note the following:
The use of "Aye, Aye, Sir," instead of "Yes Sir" is considered proper usage.
Although it is proper to address officers by their rank it is also proper to address officers below the rank of Captain as "Mister". Higher ranking NCO's should always be addressed by both rank and last name, except Staff NCO's may be called just Sergeant. First Sergeants and Sergeant Major however should be addressed by rank. It is traditional that Marines while in uniform and in public, or out of doors on a military base do not do any of the following:

  • Put your hands in your pockets
  • Chew Gum
  • Whistle
  • Smoke on the street
  • Embrace or hold hands with a woman.
  • Hold an umbrella- not even as an escort
  • Break step, while walking with another person.
