The Church's Statuary and Other Art

The lovely statue of the Pietà entitled "Our Lady of Sorrows" which is located in the rear of the church was donated to the parish in 1899 by Mother Mable Digby of Rome.

These angels are found in the sanctuary around the altar. As you might tell from the position of the hands, the one pictured on the left once held a censor which could be filled with incense. There are two of these angels; one on each side of the altar.

The two angels below hold scrolls with Latin phrases from the Gloria: "We praise You" and "We bless You."

This bronze, which is found in the rear of the church, is called "The Family of Jesus." It illustrates the diversity of ages, of gender, and of cultural and ethnic origins which comprise the people of God – the Family of Jesus.

Three statues are located up in the choir loft. The first one is St. Charles Borromeo, the patron saint of our parish. The second statue is of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The last statue is of St. John Berchmans who is always portrayed with his crucifix, his rosary, and his Jesuit rule book. John was only a young Jesuit seminarian when he died at the age of twenty-two. He appeared to Sr. Mary Wilson at the Academy of the Sacred Heart here in Grand Coteau and was influential in her miraculous cure.

A statue of St. Anthony of Padua holding the child Jesus and a lily, symbolizing purity, and one of St. Ann, the mother of Mary, are displayed in the rear of the church. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the new Eve who is crushing the head of the serpent with an apple in its mouth, is found in the south transcept.
