General Information

Harry Spence Elementary School is one of the largest of the eleven elementary schools in La Crosse. We are located near Central High School and Erickson Swimming Pool. In 1953 Harry Spence Elementary was built at the corner of 21st and Bennet Street.s. With over 450 children we offer preschool through fifth grade. We are a school very representative of the city, reflecting the same diversity make-up of as greater La Crosse. We are also a neighborhood school, surrounded by homes and families of our students. We have a beautiful physical facility and a large green space for our outdoor learning. We are one of the three elementary schools that serve students with cognitive disabilities in special education.

All students at Spence attend classes together, and many special services are offered, including English Speakers of Other Languages, Title I reading and math, High Performance Learning, orchestra and many other opportunities based on need and interest. We also offer choices for parents with multi age classrooms, regular straight grades, and classrooms that "loop" with their teachers, providing a longer relationship between families and schools. Our teachers lead engaging, challenging classes and work with students beyond their classes in supervisory and coaching activities. Our teachers are leaders in our school, the La Crosse District, and Wisconsin serving on professional committees and teaching their colleagues. We have a high rate of parent volunteers in all areas of our school life. Discipline rates are very low, achievement is high and we pride ourselves on the fact that Spence is a safe place for quality learning.
