Swan Mission Search and Rescue
Search Area

Swan Mission Search and Rescue is responsible for that territory (in the state of Montana) which encompasses Lake County north of the Flathead Indian Reservation, and from Flathead Lake to the Swan Range Divide.  This area encompasses 472 sq mi  (302,080 acres) of land and water.

It consists of:

• 360 sq mi (230,400 acres) of roaded land
• 40 sq mi (25,600 acres) of unroaded land (roads are more than a mile away)
• 22 sq mi (14,080 acres) of wilderness (Mission Mountain Wilderness)
• 50 sq mi (32,000 acres) of major lakes (Swan Lake & Flathead Lake)

 Within this area we are responsible for:

• 2 major lakes (Swan and Flathead)
• 50 minor lakes
• 30 miles of river (Swan River)
• 2000 miles of smaller streams
• 1201 miles of roads (figures obtained from USFS database)
• 405 of these miles are open yearlong
• 49 of these miles are open during the summer
• 747 of these miles are closed with a gate or a berm yearlong
• 135 miles of forest trails (established trails)
