Whitetail deer are brown with a white tail. They eat grass, berries, apples, and stuff from out of your garden. Deer mainly live along riverbanks and in the forest. When fawns are born they have white spots. About 79 percent of pregnant whitetail deer have twins or triplets. About 30 percent of fawns do not survive. When male deer get older they grow big antlers. They are the most common game in the forest. Deer that live in meadows or mostly light brown, ones that live in the forest or dark brown. When the fawns get older their spots disappear. |
Mule deer is another type of deer. They weigh about 125lbs. to 330lbs. Mating season for them is between October and December. They have one to four fawns (two average). They live up to ten years (25 years if their lucky). They have a black tipped tail that is 50 to 85 cm. long. Mule deer antlers are smaller than whitetail deer. Sometimes they leap instead of running. They can leap up to eight yards. When they do run they can run up to 35 miles per hour. In the summer their coat is yellow reddish brown. In the winter their coat is more grayish. Males are much bigger than females. They are slower and less colored than the whitetail deer. Mule deer eat leaves, herbs, weeds, and grass. They are great swimmers and sometimes they swim to escape danger. |
The Grey squirrel is found in America, Britain, and Asia. They are the largest tree squirrels in Canada. In some places, they are a black. Their tail is used as a rudder when they jump from tree to tree. In the winter, their fur is longer and thicker. Also in the winter, they wrap their tail around their body to stay warm. They live in trees, stumps, and logs. They are most active during the day. They eat berries, seeds, nuts, walnuts, butternuts, insects, eggs, and baby birds. Breeding season is from January to February and from June to July. The mothers have one to six babies a year. |
There are twenty-one different kinds of chipmunks. On the other side of the U.S. they are called Tamias. They are much smaller than a squirrel. They have black and white stripes down their back. Chipmunks also have brown feet and white stomachs. Sometimes their cries sound like bird chirps. They live in tunnels under the ground and in trees, sometimes they build nests up in trees. Mating season is usually in the spring when the snow melts. Females have two litters per year. They have four to six babies each year. Baby chipmunks eat insects, earthworms, flowers, berries, cherry and plum pits, and mushrooms. Chipmunks do not hibernate. Their enemies are dogs, cats, hawks, weasels, coyotes, martens, foxes, snakes, and owls. |
Raccoons are named after Algonquian Indian word arakun meaning he scratches with his hands. They wash their food before eating it. Raccoons live 3 to 5 years. They eat crayfish, berries, frogs, small fish, sweet corn, potatoes, and bugs. Half of the raccoon is made of fat. The breeding season is generally begins in late January or early February. They have 3 to 7 pups. They are born with no teeth and eyes closed. They live in hollow trees, caves, stumps, logs, barns, vacant fox or groundhogs burrows. |
Martens are pale gray or dark brown. Their family members are the weasel, skunk, and minks. People believe martens entered America 60,000 years ago. They are the size of a cat, but with shorter legs. Mating season is from late July to early August. Their litter size is from two to six pups. Marten’s greatest enemies are hawks and owls. They live in dens or hollow trees. They eat squirrels, shrews, eggs, berries, rabbits, and grouse. In the winter they hunt under the snow. Marten’s hate water. If the weather turns really cold they can den up for several days. |

Skunks are a family of the weasel family. They are black with a white strip or white spots. Their litter can be from one to seven young’s. They are born from late April to early June. Skunks tend to live in burrows or hollow logs. They eat mice, lizards, frogs, birds, eggs, garbage, acorns, and fallen fruit. A skunk attacks only when it is defending their baby’s. First it puffs out his fir, stomps his foot, and spit. If that doesn’t work, it sprays. Their greatest enemies are automobiles and great horned owls. |
