Sir Richard Frances Burton

Sir Richard Frances Burton was born on March 19, 1521. By the time he was 20, he could speak 25 different languages.

He traveled through Africa. Some of the places he traveled were Suez, Mecca. The year he traveled to Suez was 1853 -1854.

In 1855 Burton and three other men went to find the White Nile. By the time he got there, there were only two men left. They didn’t find the White Nile.

In 1857-1858 he was in a war. He was on the US side. In 1859 he returned to Africa, from the war. Burton and his crew were looking for the source White Nile. They were the first Europeans to discover Lake Tanganyika. John Speke, part of his crew, went on to discover Lake Victoria, which he proclaimed to be the source of the White Nile. Burton disagreed then their friend ship was over. Burton went on and wrote The Tales of the Arabian Nights. He died on October 20 , 1890.
