Lewis and Clark

Hello my name is Son of Rising Sun. I live in the Mandan village. We live on the Missouri River, where there are great herds of bison.  It is very flat with no hills.

It was early winter. Dark Moon and me were out hunting. When all of a sudden these two big boats pulled up. A man jumped out screaming orders. He had a blue suit on and said, “Tie the boats up.”

Dark Moon and me ran back to the village yelling, “White man, White man.” Five warriors and papa, aka the chief, went to visit them. Two of them came over and asked if we were friendly. My father said, “Yes, come with me.” They went to my hut and talked till sun got low.

Then the men went back to their boats and got their men and supplies. They lived with us. Dark Moon and I overheard the men talking. Captain Lewis said, “In the spring we will leave.” Then their dog ran up and made us happy. Later that day Mr. Lewis showed us how to shoot a gun.

We went to visit Mr. Clark. He showed us his maps and compasses then gave us each a compass. When it started getting warm they got to working on their boats. In a few weeks they would leave soon. The next week, we were all very sad. But they said they would be back. We’ll never forget that man called Lewis.
