Chapter 1 - WATERLOGGED

Most people think being on the EMT Search and Rescue team is an easy job and that we never get called. They’re wrong. We have one of the hardest jobs out there.

Hi, I’m the leader of this team. I’m the one that controls what goes on. I love my job, I think it’s fun. We go out for the Coast Guard on stormy nights. Like tonight, but most of the time we work on land. The missions are not classified because they’re on the news a lot. A shark had attacked a fisherman’s boat and the fisherman. The partner shot the shark and called us. It was very hard to find him because of his position.

One hour later- - - -

The chopper finally arrived. We sent a man and a stretcher down. The boat was sinking, but the men made it back up to the chopper. We had to get the fisherman’s partner as well.

The Coast Guard boat was 30 miles away and his bite was getting worse by the minute. When we got there, the fisherman was doing poorly. As soon as we got him out of the chopper, we rushed him to the medical station.

A week after that we got notices that he had lived. That was one of my hardest missions.

"We got a mission, Sir."

"What happened now? "

"A hurricane hunter crashed 10 miles from here."

"What are the conditions?"

"They’re awful!!"

"Can we make it?"

"Only if we hurry!"

Five minutes later - - - -

As we approached the site I heard the pilot saying, "It sank, Sir."

"Let’s check the perimeter."

One week later - - - -

"There are no survivors," said the pilot.

"The search is over."

"Yes, Sir," said the pilot.

"Sir, something is wrong with the chopper."

"What? What’s wrong with it?"

"I don’t know yet."

"Check the fuel."

"The fuel is full. The engine is broken, most likely. And none of us know how to fix it — is the problem."

"Yes! We have to ditch. First, call another chopper."

"NOW!!!!"

"Yes, Sir."

"Come on! Move! Move! Move!"

"You should bail out now, Sir."

"Yes, but you go first."

"Yes, Sir."

"All right. Now it’s my turn."

"Is everyone here?"

"Yes, Sir."

"The chopper is here!"

"Here comes the rope ladder."

"All right! Every one up!"

"We are going home!!!"
