WESTERN HEMLOCK

Bark: The bark on a Western Hemlock is brown to reddish and brown. The bark becomes thick with age and strongly grooved with age.

Cones: The cones come in different colors, like greenish to reddish purple. They turn brown with age.

Full grown height: 60-75 feet tall. Its diameter is 1-3 feet,but in the virgin forest they can grow up to 100 feet and 4 feet in diameter.

Habitat: This tree lives in eastern parts of Ohio. It also grows to the west of the Rocky Mountains.

Uses: The bark of this tree was used for tanning leather because of its tannic acid. Also many animals use the Western Hemlock for feeding purposes.
