Earl of Sandwich

Aloha everyone, my name is Napo’o ‘ana ka la. It means sunset in Hawaiian. I am 24 and married. My husband’s name is Ikaika. It means strong.

It was my 24th birthday. We were swimming in the ocean, when suddenly we saw a ship. We noticed there were some men. We quickly got out of the water. When the ship came to shore, there was a man that came off first.

He wanted to talk to me. I was very scared. He asked, “What is your name?” I told him, “Napo ’o’ ana ka la.” He said it was a pretty name. Then we started talking.

“I was born on November 3, 1718.”

Then he gave me something , I think it was called a sandwich? It had beautiful turkey and cheese. After that he wanted me to try it. At first I smelled it just to make sure that there is any poison. There wasn’t any. After that, I tried it. It was delicious!

We started to talk. He said, “I have had a busy life, I was a member and duke of the Bedford gang.” He was lord of state in 1751-1763 and 1770 and 1771. He was lord of the admiralty in 1748-1751 and 1776- 1781. I guess he likes to talk about himself to a lot of people. He still was a politician and naval administrator/commander in ministry. He was very smart.

Then he started talking about his childhood, “When I was a kid, I went to Elton and Cambridge School, then I went on a prolonged grand tour. People started liking my smartness at age 11. Even though I had a disease called gastrointestinal disorder, I still went exploring.”

Once we were done talking, we had some of my famous Haupia cake/pudding. He loved it. He said he would come visit me more often. We said good bye. He got on his ship and took off. Once he got back to his home, he lost all his money and ruined his life for gambling.

On Dec. 20th, 1792 one of his men came to see me. He said that Earl died on April 30. He died of old age.
I am now 26 and I have a beautiful little girl named Malamalama o ka la, it means sunlight. I will never forget my 24th birthday when Earl of Sandwich visited me.
