How Cocker Spaniels lost their tails.

A long time ago, a family lived in a cabin out in the country. There was prairie grass all around with a pond near by. Large round hay bails stood very tall in the field. One gray cold snowy day the owners of the cabin decided to go to town. They put all the dogs in the wagon and started on their way to town along the bumpy road. Except for Velvet.

Velvet was asleep in the nice warm cabin. Velvet woke up shortly after they left, to find out that the fire had died and that the other dogs where gone. Velvet pried opened the door with her paws and looked around. She went out to the chicken coop to find no one there. Then she went to the field to look for her people. Velvet ran to the road to find fresh wheel track. She was alone for three days.

Sadly she walked slowly to the house. She was really hungry because she hadn’t eaten. Then Velvet remembered that they had food in the barn. She ran down to the fences. The chicken wire made it much harder to get through the fence. There was hole so she was able to slip through the gate and the fence.

On her way down the two horses that where left were Misty and Cinnamon. Misty was mad that Cinnamon always made it to the hay pail first. As Velvet passed between them, they got in a fight. They were rearing and biting. Velvet tried to get out of the fight before she got kicked. She got kicked on the rump by Misty.

Velvet ran up to the cabin. She was  hurt but she didn't know it. After four days her tail started to hurt. Then in 30 minutes the family was home. Wren said, “What happened to your tail.” Velvet looked. It was gone. Velvet said, “I lost my tail. My tail is gone, my precious tail." Velvet remembered the fight. She knew how she lost tail. That is how Cocker Spaniels lost their tails.
