Pecking Order

Pedestrians pushed past an old lady,
slim in her shabby black dress.

She stood hesitating
at the curb-edge of corner and sidewalk,
staring up at the sky.

At a gap in foot traffic,
she bent, quick as a robin,
to retrieve a long piece of red licorice
from the concrete.

Her dark eye flashed a wary triumph
as she gobbled up her prize.
