Daddy Come Lately

see Readers' Comments

Dan isn't crazy about marrying the 16-year-old girl he got pregnant, but he is excited about the baby he knows is his daughter because she has his red hair. He'll be cut out of her life unless he emigrates from his home in the rural Midwest of the USA to live in a megalopolis-- London, Ontario. Camille isn't keen on marrying Dan, either. He's neither drop-dead good looking, nor wealthy, and not even ambitious. But he's good with kids, and she's stuck not only with a baby, but also a younger brother with behavior problems and a mother who's a wannabe guru.

from Chapter 1:

He frowned, thinking hard. Then blew out a long breath and decided to go for it. "Mom, I thought about waiting to talk to you and Dad at the same time. But Dad will have a cat, so can I tell you first and then you try to break it to him easy? I never could talk to him without he'd almost split a gut."

"Try to understand and don't be so hard on him. You really disappointed him, Dan."

"I've got to move to Canada, Mom."

"What? Eastern Iowa wasn't far enough away? Now you've got to leave the whole durn country?"

"I wasn't figuring to leave. I mean, I thought I'd stay at Wild Wind. But, well, you see, I got a girl pregnant and . . . ." He heard his mother suck in her breath, though he couldn't see her clearly in the dark.
