Katie Did, Wouldn't You?
1992

Katie has a dandy friend
Who grows in her back yard.
Golden bloom on hollow stem,
And Katie's health she'll guard!

"Katie, drink my dandy tea
And eat my leaves of green.
A healthy child then you will be,
So robust, strong, and lean."

"So nutrient rich, my jagged leaf,
It only takes a few,
Mixed with spinach, chopped with beef
In salad, or in stew."

Though she is a humble flower
That most folks call a weed,
Dandelion has such power,
She is our friend in need.

Katie in the garden

"Want to go to Flowerland?"
She said to Kate one day.
"I'd love to visit Flowerland,
But I don't know the way."

"Rub my face against your cheek
And slowly count to two.
Close your eyes, now; don't you peek.
Imagine green and blue.

"Now count three and four, five, six;
Think yellow, orange, and red.
You're gonna love my magic tricks,"
The dandelion said.

Katie did as she was told,
And soon she smelled a rose.
Just as yellow turned to gold,
A petal touched her nose.

"Here we are, my human friend,
Where flowers talk and sing.
In harmony their voices blend,
Good messages they bring."

"Welcome, Katie," said the rose,
"I'll sing my little song.
When you learn the way it goes,
Why don't you sing along?"
(Yellow Rose song)

Purple coneflower waved a leaf,
I have a song to share,
You'll learn much, that's my belief;
You'll like it, I declare!"
(Echinacia song)

Dandelion called to Kate,
"It's almost time to go.
One more song; it's getting late,
The sun is sinking low.

"Let me sing my own song now,
Of all the ways I serve."
Dandelion made a bow,
Her hollow stem a curve.

Then lifted up her sunny face
And sweetly sang her song.
As she sang, she swayed with grace
While breezes sang along.
(Dandelion song)

When Kate had heard her friend's sad song,
She kissed her yellow face.
"I'll care for you my whole life long,
My yard you'll always grace.

"And I will eat your tender leaves
Or steep your leaves for tea,
You'll keep me healthy, I believe;
My friend you'll always be!

"But now, just look, the sun is down;
We really must return.
Can you take me back to town?
I know there's more to learn,

"But I'll come back another time
To see you all again.
We'll sing your songs all in rhyme,
Our voices we will blend."

Dandelion smiled at Kate,
Close your eyes," she said.
"We really haven't time to wait,
Think green, then think of red,

"And orange, yellow, purple, blue;
Count backwards: 6 5 4 3 2.
Think of Daddy, Mommy, too,
And Tommy who all wait for you."

Just as the moon rose o'er the lake,
Kate and her dandy friend
Made it home, for goodness sake,
And that's the story's end!

Katie don't; Katie do,
Katie did, wouldn't you?
