Readers' Comments - Daddy Come Lately

Daddy Come Lately is a young adult romance. Farm boy meets city girl? Sort of. Sixteen-year-old Camille lives in London, Ontario. Shy, redheaded Dan is an American farm boy. He has complicated his life (and hers) by getting Camille pregnant. A baby girl is born. Dan's Catholic parents insist he do the right thing by Camille--marry her.

Dan is not long out of high school. He works as a carpenter's assistant to save money to emigrate to Canada. He arrives in time for his little girl's first birthday only to find Camille won't have him. Or will she? Or does he really want to marry her anyway? There is this other dark-eyed Middle Eastern beauty whose quiet charm beckons him.

The plot weaves the delicate sensibilities of duty-bound, star-crossed teenagers with the colder, harsher, bitterer realities of older adults. The resulting tapestry is quite lovely.

I just finished the three books you were kind enough to send me. I think they are charming as hell, and I gobbled them right up! I smile at your utopian notions of the kind of community you think would work, and the way you absolutely ignore the major problems that come up in ANY community -- sexual jealousy, resentment of different energy levels, disagreements about the amount of control the group may or can exercise, and so forth.

Your little offshoot groups are a joy to imagine, and I only hope you don't take them seriously. Your characters are good, and you don't pull any punches in character descriptions or motives. I was dismayed that you let your major character, Cheetah, fall in love and marry into Muslim society. Talk about asking for trouble! However, we only got to see the first little part of the relationship, so we didn't have to suffer through what the characters would have to live through. You're such a romantic! Do you really think that romantic love and powerful sexual attraction are a good basis for a lifetime relationship?

Anyway, your books are good reading, and I wish you success in finding your market.

I enjoyed reading Daddy Come Lately. When the story began, I couldn't imagine where it would go & how it could turn out positively for Cheetah and his daughter. It was a good story with interesting characters!
