Outdoor Worships
The annual Prentice Park worship service and potluck will be held Sunday,
July 13 at 10 a.m. at the park. Bring a dish to pass, plates and utensils,
and lawn chairs if you’d like. We’ll celebrate outdoor communion
and a baptism. Join us for this great tradition and enjoy the beauty
of God’s creation.
On Sunday, July 20, we’ll be celebrating
Lake Superior Day. There will be an abbreviated worship service in the
sanctuary followed by a trek to the Lake (Mazolwski Beach) with a time
of thanks to God for this incredible resource and our fellowship time.
Potluck desserts are welcomed for this day. Bring your swimsuit, enjoy
the water, and linger on the beach as long as you wish.
Church Day Camp
Day Camp for our children and youth will be held from July 28 to August
1. Younger children will gather at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and
our older children at Saron Lutheran. Check for details later this month
in the church bulletins or call us for registration information.
Summer Hymn Sings
Beginning July 6, you invited to join in community hymn sings on the
lawn at Bay View Park (across from the Pamida Store) each Sunday evening
at 6 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Different churches will offer
some special music, but the focus of the evening will be community singing.
Our church will provide leadership on August 3. Enjoy the beauty of
the lake, good community fellowship, and worship in song.
The Church Family
Our sympathy to the family of Ruth Campbell. Services were held at the
church on June 17 in celebration of Ruth’s life. She and her husband,
Aaron, were long time faithful members of the congregation.
Habitat for Humanity Work
Day
On Saturday, August 9 beginning at 9 a.m., Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
has invited us to team with some of their members working on the Habitat
house planned for construction in Ashland at the 1500 block of East
5th Street, Ashland. Put the date on your calendar if you'd like to
help. Work begins at 8 a.m. Dave Krueger, an area carpenter/contractor
will be supervising volunteers.
Items for Sale
We have several large fans, lots of long fluorescent light bulbs, and
an upright piano that we would like to pass on to those who need these
items. We’ll accept offers/gifts for these items, but the piano
is a 100% gift to someone who could use it. Call the church for more
information or stop by and take a look.
NETWORKERS Malaria Prevention
Program
Did you know?
o Malaria is the leading cause of death among children under five in
Africa.
o Children who survive malaria may suffer life-long disabilities.
o Pregnant women are three times as likely to develop severe malaria
as are
non-pregnant women.
Malaria is transmitted by a mosquito-borne parasite.
o There are 300-500 million cases of malaria worldwide each year.
o Sleeping under an insecticide-treated mosquito net significantly reduces
rates of malaria infection.
o Insecticide-treated mosquito nets are inexpensive and easy to use.
Networkers is a ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) that links
Christians in the U.S. and overseas in a program that provides malaria
prevention education and makes mosquito nets available and locally-affordable.
What can we do? The Mission Committee of the Session is promoting the
Networkers’ Mother's Day project, which provides you with Mother's
Day cards to send to your loved ones in exchange for a suggested donation
of $10. Contributions in any amount are welcome. The cards will be available
here after church on Sundays in April. Watch for more information.
Mission Committee
Parking on Sundays
Associated Bank is asking that folks keep lanes
and access open to the new ATM machines they have installed in the drive-throughs.
They are happy to continue to let us park on their property but ask
to keep the ATM's in the drive-throughs accessible to customers.
Presbyterian Women Mission
Notes
The Women's Association is no longer collecting the fronts of greeting
cards because the St. Jude's Children’s Ranch has stopped accepting
them. They have become overwhelmed, and we do not have another outlet
for the cards. Many thanks to those of you who supported this over the
last few years.
The Craft Basket is still out in the dining room for donations to Morris
Forks Craft Co-op in
Kentucky. They need sewing materials such as thread, needles, buttons,
trims, etc. and yarn, along with craft books and craft magazines. We
also collect Campbell's Labels for Education, and now need only the
UPC or barcode and the small Campbell's logo next to it, not the whole
label. Thanks for the support.
A Welcoming Church
Churches like to believe they are friendly and welcoming. I like to
think that our church is exactly that way. But welcome happens not based
on what we like to think but what we actually do. When you see a new
face at church seek that person out, introduce yourself, express your
delight at their presence, invite them to stay for coffee, if possible.
It is you and me, one by one, who make the church welcoming.
When You Are In The Hospital
Just a reminder that things
have changed at hospitals in recent years (HIPPA laws) so that no
information can be given to anyone about your presence there without
specific release or request. This means that not even the pastor can
check the general registration list to see if a member of the congregation
is in the hospital (I used to do this three times a week). Please, if
a loved one is
hospitalized, let us know at church. This summer we've missed several
folks. I always feel badly that I've not visited when I learn after
the fact about a hospitalization. I'm not too busy, it's what I want
to do. We need your help in communicating this information. I suspect
many people still assume the minister can find out at the hospital if
someone is there just by checking a list. Unfortunately, that doesn't
happen anymore. Darrel

The Legacy Fund
The Legacy Fund is the fund we have dedicated towards paying for our
current building project. People have contributed to the fund through
gifts of equities and cash. Many members have pledged their gifts over
a five year period. Because more than fifty percent of our project will
be completed this year, our fund is currently stretched thin. A letter
is being sent to all church members and friends updating them regarding
current contributions to the fund and asking if they might be able to
pay ahead on pledges or make a contribution immediately rather than
wait until December. Please, if you haven’t pledged or contributed
to The Legacy Fund consider a gift now. It is a big project and requires
the participation and support of everyone. No gift is too small—every
gift is appreciated. No longer is the projecttheoretical; the results
are here and we are delighted at the construction that has been accomplished.
If you can help us financially in the next month it will be greatly
appreciated! And thank you to all who have given!
Endowment Fund
Our church is blessed with an Endowment fund
that has enabled the congregation to stretch its limits in terms of
mission and ministry across the years. Most recently we utilized $250,000
(about a third of the fund’s value) to address costs of renovating
the church facility. The fund exists only because members of the church
in year’s past provided gifts (bequests) as memorials, naming
the church as a beneficiary in their wills. The Investment Board elected
to assist in overseeing the fund will begin a low key effort to encourage
our members to consider including the church in their estate planning.
Information will be provided describing how the fund is managed and
how gifts can be made in a wide variety of ways, often with significant
tax advantages. This fall the Board will host a gathering for people
interested in learning about the importance of making a will and how
to do that, family trusts, the roles of powers of attorney and much
more. It is the Board’s desire to provide helpful, practical information
as well as hold before the congregation the many ways our Endowment
fund allows the church to do ministry and maintain our beautiful facility
for future generations. We’d like to think it is worthy of your
consideration as you plan for the eventual disposition of your estate.
