ABOUT MY BOOKS

Pat’s new book, “Children, Come to Me”, is a good follow-up to her first book, “Let the Children Come” found below.  It is of the same format, but different lessons.  One lesson, titled “Scars”, is a story her father told her as a little girl.  It seems that when her dad was young, her grandfather required him to nail a nail in a tree in their yard every time he did something bad.  When he did a good deed, he was allowed to pull a nail out of the tree.  He worked and worked until all nails were removed.  When he ran to his dad and told him the nails were all gone, his dad expressed his pride that the nails had been removed, but pointed out that the scars were still there.  It is a reminder to all of us that even though our sins may be forgiven, the consequences still remain, so we should be very, very careful about our actions.  Children are reminded that our sins affect others as well as ourselves.

“Let the Children Come” grew from a concern for the spiritual development of children.  Since prayer has been taken out of school and so many Christian things are being restricted, it is incumbent upon the parents, grandparents, and church workers to provide virtually all of the spiritual training for children.  As I gave children’s sermons at our local church, visitors would often ask where they could find a book of ideas.  I found that there is very little available along this line.  Sunday School lessons give Bible stories, but time is restricted when it comes to teaching the applications of the points in the stories to real life.  This book is geared to helping children understand for themselves that the best way to live is God’s way.

As the writing of the book progressed, it seemed appropriate for use in the home as well as the church.  Parents could use the lessons for a family time at home.  Grandparents often look for activities to entertain grandchildren when they visit.  This book is a handy tool to provide worthwhile activities during those visits.  It can also be used when neighborhood children come to play and the children are looking for something to do.  It makes an excellent gift for young couples.
