John Wait and Frances Graves
John
Wait was
born in Culpeper County, Virginia on August 15, 1757 to John and Keziah Waite. He was in the 3rd Continental
Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War under Captain John Thornton. His Pension Certificate # is 23860 and it was
issued on April 17, 1834 in Laurens, South Carolina. He moved to Laurens County, South Carolina around 1790 with a number
of his wife’s relatives. He bought land
on the Saluda River at the junction of the Reedy River. He died in Laurens on March 7, 1836. He was
buried on his lands, of which some are now under Lake Greenwood, but there is a marker for
him at Old Bethlehem Church where he was a member.
Frances
Graves was
born in Culpeper County, Virginia around 1765 to Thomas and
Elizabeth Graves. Frances and John were
married in Culpeper on December 11, 1781. She died in 1844 in Laurens, South Carolina. She was a descendent of Captain Thomas Graves
who was a Jamestown Settler. She came to South Carolina with her husband, her
brother Lewis and his wife, her sister Elizabeth Sims, and her sister Ann Waite
Jones. Ann was married to Richard Waite
in Culpeper, Virginia and he died before 1785. She was remarried to Mr. Jones by 1788 in Virginia. Ann had three children by Richard Waite;
Elizabeth, James, and unknown. The relationship
of Richard Waite to John Wait is still unknown but it is suspected that Richard
Waite was the youngest son of Richard and Sarah Blake Wayte of Culpeper. This would make him the uncle of John Wait. Elizabeth Sims was the widow of Zachariah
Sims and she remarried Dr. John Creecy in Laurens, South Carolina in 1810. Elizabeth had children by Zachariah
Sims; James, Joel, Thomas, Rebecca, Lydia, Sarah, and Frances (Fanny). Lewis Graves was married to first Ann Sims,
and then he married Rebecca. He had at
least seven children, Nancy, Lucy, Martin, William, Lewis, Frances (Fanny), and Amey S.
