Frogs

Discussion Ideas

~Begin the unit with a secret in a bag.  Place a stuffed frog in a paper bag (or I like to make fabric draw-string bags out of leftover fabric).  Start giving the students clues as to what is in the bag.  Begin with harder clues and move on to obvious clues.  To make the guessing more challenging write out the clues and students read the clues.  Write out the clues but leave out important words.  Write out the clues on sentence strips, cut apart, students put the sentences together to figure out the clue.

~CREATE A POND  You will need: Ziploc quart size freezer bags, cornstarch, red, blue, yellow and green food coloring, plastic grass, green craft foam, plastic frogs & wide tape.

Directions: Pour one-third cup of cornstarch into the bag. Add one cup of water. Add one drop of blue coloring, two drops each of red, yellow, and green food coloring, a few pieces of plastic grass, the lily pad made from the green craft foam & the toy frog. Seal the bag and reinforce with the tape. Gently knead the mixture. Now each student has his/her very own pond.  This idea was found at: http://atozteacherstuff.com/go/jump2.cgi?ID=4078

Cooking

~Frog Floats -  give each child a clear cup filled with lime sherbet, 7-up or sprite, a straw, and m&m's or marshmallows to represent the frog's two eyes. This treat is a supplement to stories, songs and finger plays about frogs in the springtime.

~Pond life- snacks  Make blue Jell-O with the children in your class. Before the Jell-O has hardened insert gummy worms and gummy frogs.

~Make green Jell-O jiggler squares to simulate "lily pads" and then add gummy frogs.
