Apples 2002

Our class would like to know what is your favorite kind of apple?  We would also like to know how many seeds did you find in your McIntosh apple.  Won't you join our class in this apple-ing project?

Here is what your class needs to do:

1.  Buy 4 apples:  1 granny smith, 1 rome, 1 mc intosh, and 1 delicious apple for each group of students.  You decide how to divide your class into groups.  But when you submit your data, please only send in 1 vote for favorite apple and 1 McIntosh apple seed count answer.

2.  Taste test each apple.  Then as a group vote for your favorite apple.  Send me your favorite apple type at judybrown@centurytel.net.

3.  Count the seeds of the McIntosh apple.  Send me the number of seeds you counted.

4.  Your class may decide to make graphs of the information listed above.

5.  You may also decide to create a web page for the information listed above.  If you do, please send a link to me and I will do my best to include it on this page.

6.  Here is the information you will need to submit:

Apple Activities: the following activities can be completed in science class, in conjunction with a reading theme, used as journal entries, or used in a language development class.

-put the apples in a mystery box/bag, have the children ask questions to try to identify what is in the box/bag

-guess the number of seeds in the apples before cutting them open

-mass the apples using bears, chalk, paper clips, pencils, or whatever you can think

-use string to find the circumference of each type of apple

-hide the apples, children try to find the apples, use the terms you're getting warmer/colder as they get closer or farther away

-make an apple recipe book

-use the different apples to make patterns

-use the apples to classify (red apples, green apples, apples with stems, apples with bruises, tall apples, short fat apples)

-after you have cut the apples open use hand lenses to investigate the meat of the apple, the skin, the seeds, the stem.  Students can draw pictures of what they see.

You may register your class at any time, the sooner the better!  You can submit your project data  after  September 16, 2002.  Check back for more information on this apple project and a listing of project participants.
