Organizational Meeting Thursday, April 2 at 3:00
in Coach Hilker's classroom in 8 East.

FIRST PRACTICE:  Since we have 40 boys out for tennis this year and only 4 courts on which to practice, we will split the team into two practice squads by grade.     First practice for the 8th grade squad will be Monday, April 6 at the Quincy Street courts from 3:00 - 4:30.  First practice for the 7th grade squad will be Tuesday, April 7 at the Quincy Street courts from 3:00 - 4:30.

Each player needs to bring 2 cans of unopened new tennis balls to the first practice.

Below is a tentative schedule for the season.  For the first three weeks, we will alternate practice days (8th, 7th, 8th, etc.)

Our first meet is Thursday of week 3, April 23.  Our top nine players are varsity matches for all meets.  These players will practice everyday beginning week 4.  Head-to-head matches and coach's evaluations will determine the initial top nine.  Players may then challenge higher ranked teammates to move up the ladder.  Practice time cannot be used for challenge matches except for Friday optional practices.   Players not in the top nine (the reserves) will continue to practice as 7th and 8th grade squads and compete in exhibition matches at meets as grade level squads as well.

7th grade reserves will practice Mondays and compete in Tuesday meets (see schedule below for April 27 meet @ Aquinas),  while the 8th grade reserves will practice on Wednesdays and compete in the Thursday meets.  Fridays will be free days with practice optional for players in both grades.  Bad weather on meet dates will affect this calendar, so please check back often.  Every effort is made to reschedule meets canceled because of bad weather.

PLAYER EXPECTATIONS:

    1.  Bring two cans of new unopened tennis balls to the first practice.
    2.  Practice attire:  shorts or sweats, a shirt you can move in, and tennis shoes.  You will be sent home to dress appropriately if you show up in jeans.
    3.  Show good sportsmanship at all times.  You are representing your school, town, family, team, coach, and yourself when you are on the court.  Foul language, racquet throwing, and/or temper tantrums at practice or in meets will not be tolerated.  Tennis is a sport for civilized gentleman; behave accordingly or find another activity.
    4.  Lead by example.  Classroom performance, both academic and behavioral, will affect your playing time.  You are expected to be a leader in and out of the classroom.
    5.  Support your teammates during practice and at meets.  Stay after your meet matches to support your teammates.
    6.  Always give maximum effort and strive to improve everyday.

PRACTICE:
Practice is 3:00 - 4:30 following the schedule above.  Be on time.  Late arrivals and missed practices will affect your playing time.  Please try to schedule haircuts, appointments, etc. outside of our practice schedule.  If you must miss practice on a day you were in school, have your parents send a note explaining why you are going to be absent at least one day before the absence.  No note will indicate an unexcused absence.

Listen closely to the announcements at 2:40 for schedule changes due to weather.

If you have not participated in a sport yet this year, please make sure you take care of the following before the first practice:

Seventh Grade Athletes will need to pick up the green colored card.
There are three sections to this card. One section requires a doctor's signature. The doctor will sign this card after the student has completed a physical examination. Make an appointment as soon as possible. The other two sections ask that you provide proof of insurance and that the student acknowledges that he/she is familiar with the guidelines found in the athletic handbook.

Eighth Grade Athletes will need to pick up the brown colored card. There are three sections to this card. One section requires your parents' permission. The other two sections ask that you provide proof of insurance and that the student acknowledges the guidelines put forth in the athletic handbook.

Note: Eighth grade students who did not participate in athletics last year at OMS will need to follow the seventh grade procedure (see information about the green sheet above) in order to participate. New students to OMS who had physicals last year at their old schools will need to provide evidence of that physical or schedule a new appointment for a physical before they can practice.
