Minnow Creek Cemetery

Minnow Creek Cemetery is located in Section 19-Township 10 North-Range 22 West, approximately 5 miles north of Lamar, Arkansas, at the junction of Arkansas State Highways 123 and 164. Burials began approximately 1837-38. Originally, a typical Upland Southern family burial ground, it has evolved into a community cemetery of about fifteen acres.

The first official status of the Minnow Creek Cemetery is found in Deed Book 62: 456, in Johnson County land records. C. C. and H. R. Chronister gave two acres "for purpose of cemetery grounds" to W. S. Ferral [sic], Mc Hickey and C. C. Morris as Trustees and their successors on 10 August 1918. The deed was witnessed by Teaman Johnson, J.P.

Twenty years later, Virgil and Newell Pearson conveyed seven additional acres to E. C. Holloway, J. M. Hickey, W. S. Ferrell and C. C. Morris, Trustees of Minnow Creek Cemetery. This deed executed 5 November 1938, is recorded in Book 85:623 in Johnson County.

As a legatee of the Grace Goodin Estate, the Clarksville Church of Christ sought a way to express Mrs. Goodin's commitment to her family and the Minnow Creek community. Mrs. Goodin was the daughter of Charles Landthrip and his wife, Floy Ragsdale. She maintained a her lifetime ties with Minnow Creek and its people. The C of C Board of Elders made a generous gift of 6.03 acres to the cemetery association in Mrs. Goodin's memory. This tract combined with Wilson Pearson's donation of .24 acres, will make it possible for the Minnow Creek Cemetery Association to serve as a family and community burial ground for the next century.

The cemetery is maintained by The Minnow Creek Cemetery Association. A permanent care fund was established in 1981 but does not yet produce enough income for required care without assistance from interested family members. The Minnow Creek Cemetery Association is an organization for all persons interested in the community and its history. There are no membership fees, but monetary donations for the care of family plots and ancestral gravesites are welcomed and encouraged. An annual business meeting is held each year on the first Friday evening in April, at 7:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall of the Mt. Home FWB Church off AR State Hwy 292.

Officers are elected for two-year terms and are responsible for cemetery maintenance. Directors are elected by a majority of the general membership at the annual business meeting and serve alternating terms of five years each. One director is to be elected at each annual meeting. The Finance Committee is responsible for the management of secured funds. All officers, directors, and committee members volunteer their time and energies to help preserve Minnow Creek Cemetery as a memorial to those generations who are buried there and a heritage for those in the future.
