MAN IS DEAD WHO CAST FIRST
LINCOLN BALLOT
Thomas Wallington, Who Died
Wednesday, Was First At
Polls in Elyria in 1860 - Formerly Mowed Park With Scythe.
---
Death came on Wednesday to the
man who claimed the
honor of having cast the first vote in Elyria for Abraham
Lincoln, when the latter was a
candidate for president.
Thomas Wallington, lately of Spencer, was the man who was
first to the polls on election
day, 1860, and cast
Ballot No. 1 for the famous war time president. This fact was
told
with
considerable pride by Mr.
Wallington at the time of
his last visit to Elyria which occurred only a short time ago.
The deceased was formerly a
prosperous farmer on Sugar
ridge and was eighty three years of age at the time of his
death. Although so well
advanced in years he
gave few indications of old age at the time of his last visit to
Elyria.
He
then repeated the challenge which
he said had stood
good for many years, a challenge to any man in Spencer to
walk to Elyria with him, a
distance of 14 miles, for
a wager. ARRIVED WITH A SHILLING.
Mr. Wallington's story was
similar to that of many
another sturdy English immigrant of the early days. He was
born in
Western Ravew, Northamptonshire,
England on April
19, 1825. He emigrated to America while a young man and so
completely used up his resources
in passage that he
landed at Castle Garden with only a shilling to his name. With
the aid of occasional work he
made his way west as
far as Elyria. His first job in Elyria was that of mowing the
grass
on the public square with a
scythe. He was hired
and paid by William Wooster, then mayor. For some time he was
in
the employ of Thomas W. Laundon,
formerly a local
merchant and he prospered to such an extent that he soon had a
farm of his own. His removal to
Spencer was the result
of a second mariage. (sic) He leaves several
children, those
best known in Elyria being Alfred and Walter Wallington who live near
this
city, Mrs. Melin of Cleveland, and Mrs. Warnock of Grand Rapids,
Mich.
His second wife preceeded him in death by several years.

WILSON, William
Grafton, July 27th,1887
Born in Yorkshire, England, in
1808, and died at the
residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Amos Moon, July 25th,1887, Mr. William
Wilson, in the 79th year of his age. Mr. Wilson was united in marriage
in the year 1836 to Miss Nancy Finn, in Yorkshire, England, when they
moved
to this country, locating in Eaton Township, O., where by their
industrious
habits and arduous labors they purchased a farm, making for themselves
a pleasant and comfortable home, where they lived up to the year 1874,
when by death he was bereft of his companion. There were born to this
union
two sons and four daughters, of whom one son and three daughters

his
two daughters, Mrs. Gillmore, of Henry county, and Mrs. Amos Moon, of

kind attentions perquisite to his declining years. Early in life those
kind parents, who were deeply loved for their kind admonitions and

saving
faith, in which to trust in life. The deceased was a loving father, a
kind
and generous neighbor and friend, and his departure leaves an aching
void
in the hearts of his near kindred. Although a great sufferer during the
latter part of his sickness, yet he was never known to complain of his
lot, but with a confiding faith centered in Him who was his support in
health and in his illness he lived the life of a Christian and
ultimately
died a triumphant death. His remains arrived at the residence of his
son,
Mr. George Wilson, on the 26th. The funeral services were conducted by

WOLF, Jack - Lorain Journal -July 18, 1988
(Incomplete Article).
Jack Wolf, 62, director of the
Lorain County Board
of Elections, died early this morning of an apparent heart attack after
collapsing on a dance floor at an Ohio reception at the Democratic
National
Convention. Wolf, who was attending his first Democratic convention and
was a member of the Democratic Party's Rules Committee, was pronounced
dead at 12:51 a.m. at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. Wolf was
named
to his fourth, two-year term as elections board director in March.
According
to Sherrod Brown, Ohio Secretary of State, Wolf collapsed shortly after
midnight while dancing with friends at a reception in the ballroom of
the
Pierremont Hotel that was filled with 500 to 600 people. Brown said someone suddenly
shouted that a person
had collapsed on the dance floor. Brown said he then called the
emergency
squad, which tried for about 45 minutes to revive Wolf. Brown said he
was
aware of past medical problems Wolf had with his heart. 'I know it
sounds
trite, but Jack died doing what he liked best. He was having fun and he
was attending a Democratic Convention". Leonard Camera, the
other
Democrat on the Lorain County Board of Elections, said "Jack Wolf lived
for politics, and (also for) the children of Lorain where he was active
in Little League for more than 25 years." Wolf, who was not married,
moved
with his family to Lorain in January, 1926. His parents, the late
Herman

The following account appeared under the heading Wellington News:
The funeral services of Mrs.
Henry Wood, of Brighton,
were held at the family residence, on Thursday, 13th instant.
Mrs.
Wood has been a great sufferer for the past year, no two physicians
quite
able to agree as to the disease afflicting her. Some
protested it
was cancer in the stomach, others pronounced it dyspepsis, etc. A
postmortem
examination proved the cause of her death to have originated in the
growing
up of the stomach, or becoming calloused so there was no action.
Mrs. Wood was a lady highly
esteemed by all who had
the pleasure of her acquantance, and was deeply beloved by the family
circle,
upon whom this affliction falls with unusual severity. Mr.
Wood is
a man widely known as a factory man, and a manufacturer of first-class

WYATT, Frank D. - Elyria Weekly Republican, Thursday May 24, 1894, Amherst
The
funeral services of Frank D. Wyatt
was held at his residence, on Thursday a. m. at ten o’clock, conducted by Rev. Reeder, of Elyria. Seats were placed under the trees
in the yard, as the house could not contain the dense crowd of friends who came
to pay their last respects to the departed. The floral offerings were very fine
and unanimous. We seldom see such a profusion of lovely flowers, which
shows how highly he was esteemed. We were misinformed in regards to the
bicycles. While Mr. Snyder was driving down the old “Stratton Hill”,
the tug, the end of which was a chain, became unfastened and dropped down,
striking the horses heels, which caused the runaway. Frank was thrown out a few
rods from Mrs. Collins’ house. He struck on his head, which struck
a stone, breaking his neck and also his skull, as Drs. Cornwall and Davison
found while making an examination the next morning. A gloom has been cast over
the entire community over this sad affair. Mr.
Geo. Wyatt, of Iowa, is in town. He came last week to
attend his brother’s funeral.
Frank D. Wyatt of South Amherst was killed
while driving home from his work. He leaves a widow and many friends to mourn
his departure. He was thirty-four years of age. Lucy
C. Wyatt and James Wyatt appointed administrators of estate of Francis D. Wyatt
late of Amherst.
