RICHMOND, Freeman   -   The Elyria Republican Newspaper, January 20,1881
In Memoriam
Freeman Richmond, an early pioneer of Lorain County, died at the residence of his son, A.J. Richmond, December 24th, 1880, at the advanced age of 91 years, 3 months, and 26 days, leaving a circle of friends to mourn his loss.  He was born in Providence R.I., August 29,1789. When about two years old, his parents moved to the State of New York, and settled on the Royal Grant, where he grew up to manhood. He had eight brothers and three sisters, all of whom died before him. At the age of fifteen, he experienced religion, and strictly devoted himself to the services of his Maker, being conscientious in the extreme.   From Royal Grant he removed to Chautauqua N.Y., and married Miss Nancy Arnold. Soon after, they moved to Sheffield, Lorain County, arriving December 1st,1815. Philinda, the only child by his first wife, was the first child born in that town. There he buried his wife, and married his second, the widow Fox, who had a family of four children. February 10th, 1825 he moved to Black River Township, at that time, comparatively a wilderness, where he lived twenty-two years, during which time six children were added to his household. On the first of March, 1848, he removed to the Middle Ridge in Amherst, where he lived till the day of his death.   In his younger days he was an industrious hard-working man, truthfully honest and upright, a good neighbor, a kind husband, an affectionate father, both to his own children, and step children who honored him with love and esteem. His character for morality was commendable, indulging in none of the frivolities of life. He was never known to attend a ball, a horse race, or to play a game of cards, nor to use profane language. He revered the Bible, with which he was familiar, and aimed to instill its principles in the minds of his children. His kind admonitions and instructions will ever be cherished by those who tenderly loved him, and deeply mourn his loss.

ROSE, Capt. Walter  (1834-1904)
For Seventy Five Years He Had Lived In Lorain, A Mariner For Many Years,
Funeral will be held Monday and Will Be Largely Attended
Walter S. Rose, one of Lorain's oldest pioneers, a resident here for three quarters of a century, or since 1837 died at the family home 508 Cornell Street at 8:45 last night after an illness which had confined him to his bed but a week.  Death was caused by tuberculosis of the bronchial tubes.  Deceased had not been in good health since last Christmas having engaged in active work but two days since then.  A week ago he arose and dressed as usual to go downstairs but was taken with a fainting spell and was obliged to return to bed from which he did not again arise.  Mr. Rose possessed a most picturesque career, having until eight years ago been a sailor on the great lakes continuously for fifty six years.  During this time, he saw great strides being made in shipbuilding and the gradual supplementing of the old time sailing vessel by the modern steel steamers.  With the advent of the latter his occupation was gone and he retired from sailing at that time.  He was of the old, rugged, and fearless school of men who daily took thier lives in their hands and in fair weather or foul, cleared port on venturesome trips on the lake.  Mr. Rose's career has been from age as cook in the galley, and ended the bottom of the ladder to the top.  He started in at fourteen years of captain of some of the smarted three masted schooners on the lakes.  From cook to master his genial disposition made him hosts of friends who sincerely mourn his demise.   On more than one occasion the sail- Notably among these was his thrilling or narrowly escaping a watery grave. experience on the force and aft vessel "Gold Hunter" which went down twenty three years ago on Lake Huron*  Mr. Rose was one of the crew of the ship at the time.  The diaster occurred in the month of November during a blinding snow storm and the crew went through untold hardships and exposures before rescued.   During his career as a sailor, Mr. Rose sailed on the following schooners, among others, "Cleveland" "Twin Sister", "Milan", "William Shupe", "Typo", a three master, which is now owned by Detroit parties and entered Lorain port last two years ago. There is probably no other pilot on the lakes who possesses pilot's papers for the entire chain of the great lakes and the St. Lawrence river as well.  Mr. Rose was a pilot in good standing for all ports on Lake Huron, Erie, Ontario, Michigan, and Superior and also had papers for the navigable portion of the St. Lawrence River.  Deceased was born at Ridgeville, Lorain county, March 13, 1834.  He would've been seventy years old tomorrow.  When three years of age, he removed with his parents to Lorain where he had resided ever since.  During his early boyhood he went to school here and received all his schooling at this place.  At the early age of 14, he started on his life career on the lakes by begining as cook on a sailing vessel.   Eight years ago, he left the service on the lakes and secured employment at the steel plant where he worked until obliged to quit last Christmas by illness.   Forty two years ago, he married Miss Louisa Lamb, who is also a pioneer of this city she having been born and raised here.  There were born to Mr. & Mrs. Rose, three children, one son, and two daughters as follows; Orlie Rose, living at home; Mrs. Edward Essex, of this city and Mrs. Harry Warden, of Port Clinton Oh.
The funeral will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the residence of the daughter, Mrs. Essex, 509 Washington Street.  Rev Harry Sheldon, pastor of First Congregational church will officiate.  A delegate from the Shipwrights, Joiners, and Caulkers Union Local No. 51 of which deceased was a member will attend.  Interment will be made in Elmwood Cemetery."
