Lena M. Garman, 72,
formerly of
Ohio 89, Jeromesville,
died at Griffeth Nursing Home Sunday afternoon.
She was born on May
25, 1916 in
Lorain County, the
daughter of George and Clara Pelton Dague. Mrs. Garman was a
member
of the Loudonville Christian Church. She is survived by one
daughter,
Mrs. Earl (Linda) Heifner of Jeromesville; 3 sons, Jerry and Allen of
Jeromesville
and David of Loudonville; 14 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a
sister,
Celia VanWormer of Elyria and a brother, Morris Dague of
Jeromesville.
Mrs. Garman was preceded in death by her husband, Lemoine in
1965.
Services will be held at the Fickes Fuenral Home in Jeromesville
Thursday
at 10 a.m. with Pastor Wilmer Ballou officiating. Burial will
be
in the Jeromesville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral
home
from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. The family suggests that memorial
contributions
may be made to the Jeromesville Volunteer Fire Dept.

a lifelong Avon Lake resident, died yesterday at St. John Westshore
Hospital after an illness of two months. Gates was a mechanic at Joyce
Buick in Lorain before retiring. He was a member of St. Mary Church,
Avon, and the Holy Name Society. Surviving are his wife,
Molly;
son, Larry, of Avon Lake; daughter, Mrs. Elaine Dieterich, of Avon
Lake; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Friends may

7 to 9, tomorrow, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Burmeister Avon Lake

a retired farmer, died yesterday at his home after a
four-month illness. He was born
in Avon Lake and had
spent his life there. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church,
Avon, and of
the Lorain County Grape Growers Association. Mr. Gates is survived by a
son, Gervis of Avon Lake; a sister, Mrs. Mary Heider, Avon; two
grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Burmeister

Church on
Saturday at 9 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Paul Seikel officiating. Burial will

75, of 36955 Orchard St., Avon,
former mayor of Avon from 1956 to 1958, died
yesterday in St. Joseph
Hospital,
Lorain, following
a brief illness. A life long resident of Avon, he was a former employe
of the Grant Photo Co., Lakewood for 34 years, and former employe of
Avon
School System from 1961 to 1964.
Prior to being elected mayor,
he
served as acting
mayor of the city from 1953 to 1955. He was also president
of the Council from 1958 to
1960
and had served as
a councilman in 1949.
He was a member of
St. Mary
Church, the Holy Name
Society and the 50 and Up Club of which he was
treasurer. Surviving are his
wife, Marie; a daughter,
Mrs. Dorothy Kohls, Avon; two sons, George, Avon and Brother
William of Holy Cross Brothers,
now serving in Ghana,
Africa; six grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 10
a.m.
in St. Mary Church. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery.

"Harry
Gawn, Ex-merchant and a Resident Here all his Life, Dead"
Passes Away after
an Illness of Nearly Three Years--funeral Thursday. Harry gawn, on of
the best
know young men of this city, died at the home of his aunt, Mrs. D. E.
Duden,
shortly before 6 o'clock last evening after suffering for several years
with a
complication of diseases. Mr. Gawn had been confined to his bed for 21
months
and prior to taking to his bed had been in ill health. For a
long time his condition had been grave and there
was no hope for his recovery. Last night the end came peacefully. On
account of
ill health, Mr. Gawn was complelled three years ago to sell
out of his
interest in the grocery business of Regan and Gawn and to retire from
active
business pursuits. For a time there was a slight improvement but his
health
began to fail and a large part of the intervening thime he spent at his
home on
East Erie Avenue. The deceased was born in Lorain and lived here all of
his
life. He attended the Lorain High School but did not
graduate.
When very young, e with his sister, Mrs. W. B. Todd, took up their home
with
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gawn, their uncle and aunt and Mr. Gawn
had made
his home with his aunt, now Mrs. D. E. Duden, all of his life until his
marriage, when he moved into his own home next door. After leaving
school he
entered the grocery business with Charles Nichols under the name of
Nichols and
Gawn. Later Mr. Nichols sold his holdings to James Reagan and
the buiness was operated under the name of Reagan and Gawn. About three
years
ago ill health prevented Mr. Gawn from attending to his business
affairs and he
retired from the business which he had helped build up and spent the
intervening period in retirement in his home. Mr. Gawn is survived by
his wife
and two children, a daughter, Elma, age 8 and a son Samuel, know as
"Dick", age 3. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Amelia
Faragher,
four brothers, Chalres, Theron, Bert and Dr. J. L.Faragher, and three sisters, Mrs. Crehore,
Mrs. A. Cameron and
Mrs. W. B. Todd, and his aunt, Mrs. D. E. Duden, with whom he had made
a large
part of his life. The deceased was a member of the local Masonic Lodge
and of
the Forest City Commandery of the Knights of Templar. He was also a
member of
<sic>. Arrangements for the funeral
service have not been fully
completed. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock
at the
family home and will be entirely Masonic in its character. Rev. W. H.
Maughiman, of the Gawn Methodist Church, will offer a prayer and the
remainder
of the services will be conducted by the Forest City Commandery, #40,
Knight Templar,
of Cleveland. The Elyria commandery will also be in attendance as will
the
members of the other Masonic bodies of this city. The local blude lodge
will
act as escort. Interment will take place at Elmwood Cemetery.

AMHERST -- Henry L.
Gerstenberger, 89, of Amherst,
died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Community Health Partners, Lorain,
following
a lengthy illness. Gerstenberger was born Nov. 10, 1911, in Cleveland.
He was raised in Cleveland and moved to Amherst when he was 16,
graduating
from Amherst High School in 1931. He lived in the Cleveland area from
1938
until 1994, when he returned to Amherst.
He and his father
owned
Gerstenberger & Son Hardware
Store in downtown Amherst from 1929 to 1938, located originally on Park
Avenue where Dr. Stan Lutz Optometry office is now. Gerstenberger was
employed
by Howe Mfg. and George D. Miller Mfg. before establishing his own
machine
tool and die company in Cleveland. The company made parts for fighter
planes
during World War II, operating from 1942 until its sale to Gray
Industries
in 1973. Gerstenberger was employed by Gray from then until his
retirement
in 1997. He coached Little League baseball and was an avid golfer and a
56-year member of John W. Barkley Masonic Lodge 621, Cleveland.
Survivors include his
wife,
Valerie (nee Jenkins);
son, Henry L. Gerstenberger Jr. of Macedonia, Ohio; daughter, Anita
Neuhauser
of Las Vegas, Nev.; and three grandsons and one great-grandson. He was
preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Geraldine (nee
Deuker),
in 1992; his parents, Henry L. and Sadie (nee Scherrer) Gerstenberger;
and sister, Clara Rose Gerstenberger.

were brought on Monday afternoon to the Brighton Cemetery where after a

died last night in St. Joseph’s hospital following a brief

relatives

Born in Medina June 17, 1894, he spent his early years in Lorain,

the old Garden Ave school and graduating from Lorain High School.
First employment was

In 1911 he was in Elyria Foundry as pattern makers apprentice.
At the foundry, he
was assistant
general manager in
1940, succeeding his brother, the late W. F. Gollmar as vice president
and general manager in 1947. In 1955, he was appointed
president.
He was elected to the board of
directors of Elyria
Memorial Hospital in 1958, president od YMCA, chairman of the board of
directors of Elyria Savings and Trust Co, Frank S. Harmon Lodge,
F&AM;
Al Koran Shrine, Cleveland; Elyria Rotary; Elyria Chamber of Commerce;
life member of St. John United Church of Christ, Lorain, where he was a
Sunday School Superintendent and many years choir directors.
Surviving are his
wife Meta M.,
to whom he was married
54 years’ a son Robert L, Elyria; five
grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by a brother, William F. Gollmar and three sisters, Carrie,
Anna,
and Thelma.
Services will be
Monday at 1:30
pm at St. John’s United
Church of Christ, Lorain, with the Rev Donald Yaekle
officiating.
Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. Friends will be

Eyria- William F. Gollmar, 65,
1315 Lake Av, former
Lorainite, for 39 years connected with the Elyria foundry division of
the
Industrial Brownhoist Corp, and its vice president and general manager
for the past 20 years, died at his home at 10:30 pm yesterday after a
heart
attack. Gollmar, with his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs.
H.
C. Gollmar, had attended a lecture at Elyria High school in the early
evening.
After he returned home, he complained to his wife of illness and died
shortly
after he retired, according to members of the family. Gollmar had lived
22 years in Lorain, from the time he was 15 years old until about 1919,
and he was employed at the American Shipbuilding Co. He had attained
membership
in the Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church and was president of
its board of trustees at the time of his death.
After a few years as
a draftsman
in Cleveland, Gollmar
came to the Elyria foundry in 1908 as head of the pattern shop when the
plant was owned by A. E. Taylor, Elyria. Working his way up
the growing
plant, he became its vice president and general manager about 1920 when
the foundry was purchased by the Industrial Brownhoist Corp Cleveland.
At the time of his death he was
also a director of
the Lorain Lumber Co., president and for many years a member of the
Elyria
city health board; member of the Lorain Masonic Lodge No. 552, Lorain
Knight
Templar and the Al Koran, Cleveland; member of the Elyria Rotary club
and
a former president of the Elyria Chamber of Commerce.
At the Elyria
foundry, Gollmar
was associated in its
management for 34 years with his brother H. C. Gollmar, assistant
manager.
Gollmar was born in Medina on June 29, 1881.
Surviving are his
widow, Irma,
two children, Richard,
Elyria and Mrs. Magdaline Goacher, Oxford; the one brother and two
sisters,
Mrs. John Neuman, Creston, and Mrs Harvey Henes, Painesville; and three
grandchildren. The body is at the Sudro-Curtis funeral home
until
tomorrow noon when it will be taken to his residence. The
body will
remain there until Sunday noon when it will be taken to Emmanuel
Evangelical
brethren church, Lorain for funeral services at 2:30 pm
Sunday. Rev
W. H. Herkner, pastor will officiate. Burial will be Monday
in Elmwood
Cemetery, Lorain.”

funeral of our late citizen, Mr. W. L. Gowe,
took place at the Baptist church on Saturday, and was well attended by
the
I.O.O.F. and other friends. The services were conducted in an
impressive manner
by Rev. E. E. Knapp, pastor of the deceased, the brethren taking charge
of the
ceremonies at the grave. The bereaved wife and daughter have the
heartfelt
sympathy of the whole community.

Charles S. Gray, 73,
221 W. 21st St., chairman of the Lorain Republican
city central committee in 1934-35, died Saturday night at his home.
Gray was a resident of Lorain for 50 years, coming here from
Pittsburgh. He was a member of the 20th St. Methodist Church,
Masonic Lodge No. 552 and the B. of R.T., of which he was treasurer for
a number of years. He was a former conductor on the Lake
Terminal
railroad of the National Tube Co., retiring in 1921 after 35 years'
service. Survivors are his wife, Mamie, one daughter, Mrs.
Howard

one grandchild, Gayle Allen; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Hamilton,
Pittsburgh, and Mrs. Martha Wentz, Los Angeles, and one brother, E.R.

Robert Gray, 38, Dies Suddenly at
Lorain Dance, March
9, 1946. Heart Attach Fatal to Letter Carrier at K-C Hall. A Lorain
mail
carrier, Robert Forgan Gray, 38, 1215 10th St, died suddenly at 9:10
p.m.
Saturday while dancing at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Broadway at 5th
St. Coroner, S. C. Ward said death was due to a heart attack. A native
of Lorain, Gray was employed as a letter carrier at the Lorain post
office
six years. He had a South Lorain route for the past four years. Active
in sports until a few years ago, Gray was a graduate of Lorain High
School
with the class of 1925-A.
He was employed at
the Lorain
Hardware Co. 13 years
and later at the City Hardware Co. for four years
prior to becoming a letter
carrier. He was a member
of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Surviving are his

V.
Schwartz home for funerals where services will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday
with Rev. Harold Albert, pastor of the First Lutheran church,
officiating.
Employees of the post office will act as pallbearers. Burial will be in
Ridgehill Cemetery.

Mrs. Minnie Green,
wife
of George W. Greene,
died at her home one-half mile west of Brighton at 8 p.m. on Wednesday
at the age of 73 years, six months and 12 days. She had been
in poor
health for a number of years; more seriously ill during the past few
months
and on last Friday became critically ill following a heart attack.
Mrs. Greene was born
in Hanley,
England, and came
to the United States at the age of four. She became the bride of Mr.
Greene
in 1884 and to this union two children were born, G. Clement Greene, of
Brighton, and Henry W., who passed away at the age of
15. She was an active member of the Brighton M. E.
church, serving
faithfully
in all its branches as long as her health permitted. She also
was
a member of the order of Maccabees.
Survivors include
her husband, son and four grandchildren.
Final rites will be
held from the
Brighton M. E. church
Saturday at 2 o'clock under the direction of her pastor, the Rev. H. H.
Patrick, Burial in charge of E. L. Sharp will be at
Brighton. The body will remain at the Sharp Funeral
Home until Saturday.

Mae Greenich, 73, of 149
Roosevelt Street died at Wooster Hospital at 10:40pm on
August
18, 1962 following a one week illness. Mrs Greenich
was
born in Piqua, Ohio on May 16, 1889 and had been
a resident of this city for many
years. She was a member of St Pauls United Church
of Christ
and the Elyria Eagles Auxillary. She is survived by
her
husband Harold Ray Greenich; one son George Grenich of Washington,
D.C. and a daughter Mrs. Harriet D. Knipper of Elyria; one
brother Ellwood Schumacher of Cadiz, Ohio and sisters Mrs
Christine "Christy" Keller of Marion, Ohio and Mrs Catherine Ansley of
Mt. Gilead, Ohio. She was preceded in death my her
parents
George Ellwood and Mary Ann (nee Belser) Schumacher and
sisters
Margaret Schumacher and Henrietta Schumacher.
Friends may
call at Reichin Funeral Home after 7:00pm today where funeral services
will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday with Rev Paul Kriete,
pastor
of St Pauls United Church of Christ, officiating.
Burial
will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in
Lorain.

Gresheimer, died at the home of his mother,
Mrs. Gresheimer, Friday evening March 25
th,
1892, of consumption, aged 29 years. He was taken with a
hemorrhage and died
suddenly. He has been sick for seven or eight years. The funeral will
be held
at St. Paul’s Evangelical Church, Sunday March 27, at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Jessie Grills,
widow of the late Thomas Grills, died suddenly at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Youngless of 374
Columbus
St., Wednesday at 10:15 p.m. She was born in Canada,
March 3, 1861, and lived in Elyria for eighteen
years, coming from Canada. Mrs. Grills is survived
by her daughters, Mrs. Bertha Rosenthal and
Mrs. Albert Youngless, of Elyria; Mrs. Arthur Horning, of Fremont; Mrs.
Orrie Stanfield, of Oberlin; and son, Ervin Grills, of Norwalk; 14
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Her sons,
Arthur and Howard Grills, preceded her in death.
The
body was taken from the Nichols Funeral Home to 250 Harrison street
Friday morning, where services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the
home of Mrs. Anna Grills Klassen. Burial will be in Ridgelawn
cemetery.
