DAWES, Peter

Saturday Jan 23, 1892 Lorain County Reporter -  North Amherst
The death of Peter Dawes occurred here at his home Tuesday, January 19, 1892, aged 77 years.  He had been in poor health for some time, his first ailment being a stroke of paralysis, followed by other complaints that broke down his constitution.  His widow, now confined to her bed, survives him. The funeral services were held at the house Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. P. E. Harding, and were very brief owing to the illness of Mrs. Dawes. The remains were placed in the vault awaiting burial in the cemetery here.  Deceased came to this country with his parents when 17 years old and settled in Lyme, Huron County, subsequently moving into Erie County, where the elder Mr. Dawes became proprietor of what was known as the “Half Way House” a country tavern situated on the road south of Sandusky, where the subject of our sketch became an expert grain buyer for Hubbard & Co. and for years he was engaged in buying grain, his opinion as to the price to be paid for grain and all other details of the business being left to his own judgment. He was engaged in this business when Milan, O[hio] was a great grain center by reason of the canal there, and which was a competitor of Sandusky. He accumulated a competency sufficient to support his comfort in his latter years of life. He was married in about the year 1866, coming to North Amherst the following year, where he made his home with Joseph Robbins on the farm now owned by N. L. Cotton. He has, therefore, been a resident of this place for twenty-five year, spending his time in a quiet way without any fixed duties and getting comfort out of life. Upon to a year of his death he appeared to be in good health, his complexion was good and his spirits lively. He was an interesting talker, a very sociable man, the whole tenor of his life seemed to be marked without a ruffle or discontent. Much might be said of the pleasant remembrances his friends and neighbors have him.  A pleasant gentleman and of a sociable disposition he enjoyed the friendship of all who knew him.
