BAKER, Charles, Weekly Chronicle, The Elyria Ohio July 31, 1903
Charles Baker, Frightfully Scalded
Charles Baker, died at the Elyria Hospital at 1:25 this afternoon from injuries received this morning.  His wife reached his bedside fifteen minutes before he died.
Charles Baker, a young man about thirty-three years old, living at Air Lime Junction, near Toledo, fireman on the Lake Shore, was brought to Elyria Hospital Wednesday morning, his flesh dropping from his body and in a very serious condition.  “He looks like a piece of raw meat from head to foot,” said his brother-in-law C. Henning.  “It is the worst sight I ever saw, and I doubt if he can live. It will be a miracle if  the doctors can pull him through.”   East bound freight train no. 60, was a “double header”. One of the engines was in charge of Engineer A. H. Wallace and Fireman Charlie Baker.  When at Black River switch, which is a little on this side of North Amherst, a flue blew out on their engine. It must have happened while Mr. Baker was in the act of shoveling coal into the furnace, with his body half turned, his back toward the mouth of the furnace and getting a shovel of coal. The flues are the round passages from the furnace to the smoke stack, through which the flames pass and heat the water.  When this flue blew out, of course the steam and hot water escaped through the furnace and hit Baker, almost scalding him to death instantly. Mr. Wallace, being in his seat, was unhurt.   Drs. Hart, Anderson and Hubbell were called, and they doubt if he will live.  He is married and has two children.  A message was sent to his wife and friends.

The Weekly Chronicle  (Elyria, OH), August 7, 1903
The funeral of Charles Baker, who died at the hospital Wednesday, being literally cooked alive from escaping steam from his engine, caused by an explosion was held from the home of Henry Schultz, corner of Columbus and Glenwood Streets, Friday morning, at 10:30, the services being conducted by Rev. Lehmann of this city; burial here.
Mrs. Baker did not get here Wednesday until just a few minutes after bandaged all over to prevent the flesh from falling off.  He talked intelligently, but kept asking for his wife and children, begging for them. He was a son of Henry Baker, who lived on the Abbey Road, and was thirty-seven years old. His children are six and eleven.   Mrs. Baker did not get here yesterday until just a few minutes after her husband died and not before as was stated yesterday.  She has not yet se n the body, her friends believing that it is best for her not to do so. She is staying with Mr. Schultz.

Dale H. Baker
Elyria has lost one of its active young businessmen, Dale H. Baker, president of Sibley, Inc.  This 43-year-old executive, apparently in robust health, died unexpectedly Thursday morning.
Newspapermen come in contact with a lot of bad news every day, but this is the kind of news to which we never become accustomed.  It is always a shock when people are taken by death in the prime of life.  Dale H. Baker had a bright future and undoubtedly a long list of plans.  He had every reason to expect many more years of active existence, but fate decreed otherwise. To his family, friends and colleagues, we offer our condolences.

BALDWIN, Daniel T. (buried in Charleston Cemetery) - The Elyria Courier February 1st, 1848
The Hon. D. T. Baldwin who died at Black River, Jan 25th was born of highly respectable parents, in Newtown, Fairfield County Conn Feb 18th 1792.  His parents having removed from Newtown to Stockbridge Mass., their son emmigrated from that place to this state, and settled at Black River in 1816, where he resided till his death.  His death succeeded an illness of only three days, occasioned by a cold, which settled upon the lungs.  No apprehensions of danger were entertained, either by himself, or others, til the day of his decease.    The County Court, of which the deceased was an Associate Judge, had commenced its sessions, on the day of his death.  On the announcement of the meloncholy intelligence, the courts adjourned till the next day.  The funeral solemnities were numerously attended at 2 o'clock P.M. of Thursday, and a discourse delivered by the Rev A. H. Betts.  Judge Baldwin was an honest man, a kind, affectionate husband and parent, a good neighbor, a well informed, and valuable citizen and public officer.  He has been frequently honored with official stations, and called to preside at various meetings of benevolent Societies, since the organization of the county.  In the fall of 1834, he was elected a member of the Legislature of the State, and served one term, with ability, and to the almost entire satisfaction of his constituency.  In 1844, he was elected Associate Judge of the County Court, which office he held at the time of his death, and filled with acceptance. Judge Baldwin made a public profession of religion, and united with the Presbyterian Church in the place of his residence in 1839, and was subsequently chosen an officer in the church.  Since the profession of his faith,, he has ever been a consistent christian, showing to the world that he walked by faith, and not by site.  He has been the efficient supporter of the infant church and society, of which he was a member, and since the dismission of the late pastor, the Rev. Mr. Cockran, he was sustained, mostly by his own efforts, the public meetings of the Sanctuary; by reading and devotional exercises.  For the discharge of his various duties in private, social, and public life, Judge Baldwin  posessed many estimable qualities.  His natural talents, his reading and reflection, his mature judgement, his acquaintance with business, and with mankind; in a word, the style of his abilities qualified him for usefullness in this Western Country, where promptness, energy, and aptitude, rather than delicate refinement, are indispensable.  His benevolence was always commesurated with his ability.  He gave, with a liberal hand, to all enterprises, for improvements, in his own neighborhood, and for objects of general utility.  His counsel and cooperation, at home and abroad, in civil, political, and ecclesiastical concerns, was highly valued, and much sought.  But alas, he has fallen saddenly, by the wisdom of a mysterious providence, and left a vacancy not easily filled.  In his sudden exit, there is a touching voice more impressive than the living utter, "Be ye also ready."  Many fall as suddenly, few as safe! Cincinnati papers please notice.

BARCHARD, William  -  The Elyria Republican Newspaper, September 3, 1885
Grafton
Died in Eaton, August 22,1885, Mr. Wm. Barchard, aged 80 years. The deceased was one of the early pioneers of Lorain County. He was born in Thorne, Yorkshire, England, in 1805. He landed in this country in 1829, since which time he has lived in the vicinity of Grafton. Eaton was then, as was the larger portion of Lorain and surrounding counties, an unbroken forest. Here in the wilderness Mr. Barchard located and here he lived for fifty-six years, sharing the hardships and privations of pioneer life, accumulating by faithful and honest toil and his keen financial abilities a pleasant home of plenty, as a reward of industry. In 1830 he married Miss Recta Lyndes, who shared with him the more prosperous results as well as trials and privations of pioneer life until the winter of 1866, when he was called to mourn her loss. Six sons and six daughters were born of this marriage, all of whom, except  the second son who died in 1864 survive him. The deceased was a man of honest and upright integrity, a kind and sympathetic husband and leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. The funeral rites were solemnized at the residence August 24th, by Rev. M.W. Reece, after which his remains were placed in the Eaton vault for future interment. The relatives of the deceased return thanks to the many friends and neighbors for the kind assistance rendered at the funeral services.

BENDER, Peter
Death of Peter Bender - The Elyria Republican Newspaper, September 1,1881
Died, Wednesday morning August 27th, 1881, at his home in Elyria, Lorain County Ohio, Peter J. Bender, aged eighty-four years, nine months, and five days. Deceased was born November 19th, 1796, in Frohnhofen, Germany, was married to Elizabeth M. Moulder in 1825, and together they left their native land with two small children in 1832 to find a home in America. They had a long and perilous voyage, arriving so late in the fall that they were obliged to stay in Boston the first winter. They then came to Elyria and bought the farm on which he has ever since lived. In addition to the hardships suffered by the early settlers, he was compelled to pay for his farm twice before he obtained a good title. They had a family of ten children, three of whom died in infancy; the other seven survive with their families living so near that they were present to follow his reminds to their last resting place. His health had not been good for several years, but he was able to be around most of the time till the last two months, when his sufferings were very severe. He retained consciousness to the last, arranging his business and selecting the text and hymn for his funeral, which was held in the Evangelical Church on South Ridge, in Amherst on Friday, August 26th, of which the deceased and his surviving wife had long been members. The services were conducted by Elder Brown (German) speaking from the text selected, Psalms 94th-19, and by Rev. Zegler (English) whose text was 2nd Corinthians 5:10. The church choir gave some sweet music when his remains were followed to the cemetery on Murray Ridge by a large concourse of weeping friends.  The family return their heartfelt thanks to all who showed them sympathy by many acts of kindness during the illness, and at the burial of their venerable parent.

BIGGS, Anna
Elyria Republican, Thursday April 5, 1894, Carlisle
Died March 30th, Miss Anna E. Biggs, youngest daughter of Mr. Joseph Biggs, aged thirty eight years. She was born in Chesterton,
Warwickshire, England and came to this country with her parents when she was three years old.  She united with the M. E. church at Elyria, under the preaching of Rev. Mudge, twenty-five years ago. >From that time until her death, she exhibited in her life those traits those characteristics that adorn and beautify a Christian life. Her disease was heart trouble and for two years past has been a constant sufferer and gradually wearing away. About three weeks ago she was taken quite sick, and not withstanding all this her faith never wavered, nor hope dimmed, and during her illness she often expressed a desire to depart to be with her Savior and at rest. Her life was one worthy of imitation – always making others happy. Her countenance was always radiant with smiles of a Savior’s love, which were ever present at home or abroad. She looked upon death as release from suffering, a gateway to a happier realm of life. She had all her funeral hymns selected; also the text 116th Psalm and 16th verse. Rev. Reeder, her pastor, made some very appropriate remarks. The services were held at home and were largely attended, which showed the esteem in which she was held by the citizens of this town and vicinity. Her casket was covered with very choice flowers. She left a father, mother, three brothers and sisters: Mr. Jonathan Biggs of Sandusky, Mrs. Burnham of Carlisle, Mr. Joseph Biggs of Sullivan, Mr. Thomas Biggs of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Jane Clark and Mrs. Sarah Miller. Her life is work is done and she has gone to enjoy the rest that remains for the people of God.
