FROM THE PASTOR
“EASTER IS EARLY THIS YEAR”
I have a list of dates when Easter is each year through 2020. In the “red hymnal” (can you remember it?), there was a list of the dates for Easter that went from 1952-2002. This year Easter is on March 23, and that is the earliest in over 53 years and it is not that early again until sometime after 2020. Does that matter to you? I have heard some say that it is too early to celebrate Easter. It will be too cold in March, and that “new” Easter outfit or bonnet just can’t be worn.
It got me thinking. Why would we think or say that it is too early to
celebrate Easter? What is it that we are celebrating? Is it the coming of Spring and warmer weather with beautiful flowers? Or, are we celebrating the victory of Jesus over death and the grave for all believers?
We hear at the Good FridayTenebrae worship that it is Friday, and the
sorrow of the cross and the death of Jesus is with us but Sunday is coming with
the joy of the resurrection Alleluias and the assurance of Eternal Life. Why would we say that is too early to celebrate Easter? Why would we want to live in the sorrow of Good Friday death and burial? Why would we desire to live empty lives when we can experience victory and the fullness of life with Easter. I am glad we can have Easter early. Let it come and bring us the blessed assurance of Christ’s triumph over the devil. He lives and because He lives you and I do too. We need Good Friday faith, but the faith reaches its completeness in Easter at the Empty Tomb. He has Risen. He has risen indeed. We do not have to wait until “later” this year-Easter is coming earlier this year to us.
