FROM THE PASTOR
We are a blessed people at Lakeside Community Lutheran. We kicked off our 25th Anniversary observance on Easter Sunday so we rededicated ourselves to be a blessing to our community. It was on March 12, 1983 that we became a congregation of the ELCA. We promised God, ourselves and our community that we would “be a light”, reflecting the Light of the World, Jesus Christ. How can we continue to be “that light” in 2008?
We can pray. I received an email this past week that I have seen before but want to share it with you even if you have seen it before. Look at your 5 fingers as you pray. Your THUMB is nearest to you. Begin your prayers by praying for those that are closest to you. These are the people that are the easiest for you and me to remember.
The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers in our schools, doctors who help us to be healthy, and our ministers who bring us the Word. They need support, guidance, and wisdom to point us in the right direction.
The next finger is the tallest and it reminds us of our leaders. This is especially important in this election year as we prepare to chose a new president and elect member sto the Congress. Pray for those that are our leaders now in Washington, Madison and Burnett County.
The fourth finger is our ring finger. It reminds us of promises we have made. It is surprisingly also our weakest finger as any piano/organ teacher will admit. It reminds us of those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need our prayers at all times.
Lastly, there is the little finger. This reminds us to pray for ourselves. If we have love and concern for others, it will help us to place ourselves in proper places in relationship to God and others. By the time we have for the other four areas, our needs will be in the proper perspective and we will be able to pray for ourselves more effectively.
That brings us to a second topic we will all face this May. We are supposedly going to receive a “tax rebate” this month. Our bishop, Duane Pederson, encourages the people of the Northwest Synod to prayerfully tithe a portion of the rebate by giving it to the poor, needy and hungry. “Be blessed to be a blessing” with this rebate. “Be a Light” to someone in the dark. Whatever you do, do it to the glory of God.
