Sonja Lodge Sons of Norway Eugene, Oregon From 1911 to 1916 there was a Sons of Norway Lodge in Eugene called Viking Lodge. On Oct 2. 1937 fifty three people met to form a new lodge, Sonja Lodge, funds held in trust for the old lodge were used to purchase flags for Sonja lodge. From 1937 to 1953 lodge meetings were held at various meeting halls in Eugene. In 1941 a building commitee was organized to plan and save for a lodge building. In 1953 a fraternity house was purchased and remodeled at the current location. 17th. May 1954 was the official opening of the new lodge.Generous loans to the lodge and the hardwork of many members made this possible. In 1959 the building was enlarged and parking lot was improved. The lodge members raised money by selling "Norsk Burgers" at the Lane County Fair for 41 years (approx. 1952-1993). The current community favorite fund raiser is the Lutefisk Dinner every January, which serves over 500 people. In addition to other events the lodge holds a flea market and bazaar every fall. In keeping with The Sons of Norway goal to preserve all things good in Norwegian culture Sonja Lodge sponsors many events and charitable activities: Norsemen singers Sonja Daughters is always active in support of the lodge and its activities. |
