I - Part 4
The Moses Bucher and Lydia Caroline Van Horn Family
(Son
of Phillip Peter Bucher)
David Kent Coy of Bloomington, Illinois, compiled the following information on Moses Bucher and his descendants. David, a descendant of Moses, had written to me in 1987, asking if my Bookers and his were somehow related. At the time I was unable to find a connection, but with the publication of Gene Hammond's book, our family relationship was established.
Moses Bucher and Lydia Caroline Van Horn were married at Frederick County, Virginia, on 7 March 1833 by John Allemong. The marriage was recorded in the Court Clerk's office in Marriage Register Book #1, page 22, line 24. According to David Coy, family tradition says that the Van Horn family belonged to the "First Families of Virginia" and were quite prominent in their neighborhood. Apparently Lydia's parents did not approve of her marriage to Moses Bucher, because his family were "hill people." Lydia was born in 1811 in Virginia; the actual date and names of her parents are unknown at present. Moses and Lydia remained in Frederick County, farming near Winchester until about 1845 when they moved to Monroe Township, Butler County, Ohio. They farmed there until 1854 when they again moved further west near Berlin, Island Grove Township, Sangamon County, Illinois. Here they remained for the rest of their lives. Moses and family are found on both the 1860 and 1870 Census' of Sangamon County.
Lydia died in 1886, and was buried in the Berlin Cemetery; Moses died at Berlin 21 December 1891, and was buried in the Berlin Cemetery beside his wife. They have a gravestone marking their final resting place. The "Springfield Journal - Register" dated 27 December 1891, page 4, column 2, gave the following obituary for Moses Bucher:
"BUCHER - Died Dec. 21, at his home in Berlin, Moses Bucher, aged 87 years. Mr. Bucher was the first man to vote under the Australian system in Illinois. He was born in Virginia and was an old settler of Sangamon County, having lived here thirty-five years. He leaves two sons, Thomas C. and Henry Bucher, and two married daughters." The obituary omitted a living son, James W. Bucher.
Here are the children of Moses Bucher and Lydia Caroline Van Horn:

James W. Bucher, eldest child of Moses Bucher and his wife, Lydia, never married. At the time of his enlistment in the Army during the Civil War, James was engaged to be married, but his fiance' wrote him a letter calling off their impending marriage. After his parents died, "Uncle Jim", as he is remembered, lived with his two sisters and their families. He received a pension for his service in the Union Army during the Civil War. With each of his pension checks he would buy a ham and a bottle of whiskey. He gave the ham to his sister, Athalinda Elton [Bucher] Simpson to cook, and then he would drink the whole bottle of whiskey while walking and singing in the cemetery.
At the time of his death in 1913, his grandniece, Carolyn Elizabeth [Pond] Mosley was three years old, and the funeral is one of her earliest memories. She remembers that a shock of wheat, representing the final harvest, adorned his grave and that upon the firing of the memorial volley of gunfire, she burst into tears because of the loud noise. She couldn't be quieted until she was taken to her grandmother's home. Sixty-one years later, while visiting the cemetery, she discovered that her grand-uncle did not have a tombstone marking his grave. Through her efforts, the Veteran's Administration, with the help of the Berlin American Legion, dedicated on Memorial Day 1975, a new tombstone for James W. Bucher's gravesite.
On 21 July 1913 the Illinois State Journal in Springfield, published James W. Bucher's obituary. Found on page 6, the details of his life are as follows:
JAMES W. BUCHER, WAR VETERAN DEAD - Was with Sherman on His March, and
Retired With Rank of Captain. - Decedent Was Former Resident of New Berlin and
Retired From Life Five Years Ago. BUCHER - died at 10:00 o'clock Sunday
morning, July 21, 1913, at the residence of his sister, Mrs. Virginia Myers,
211 West Capitol avenue, Captain James W. Bucher, aged 79 years, 6 months, and
27 days. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the
residence of Mrs. Myers and the remains will then be forwarded at 3:55 o'clock
over the Wabash railroad to Berlin, where final funeral services will be held
at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Interment will be the cemetery at Berlin.
Decedent was born in Winchester, Va., January 23, 1834, and at the age of
fourteen years removed with his parents to Ohio. After a residence in that
state of eight years, he came to Sangamon county, and for the past fifty-nine,
this has been his home. For fifty-one years decedent followed farming near
Berlin, with the exception of the years of the Civil War. Eight years ago he
retired from active life and has since been a resident of this city. At the
outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the union army as a member of Company
D, Twenty-sixth Illinois Infantry and served until the close, rising to the
rank of Captain and besides participating in many battles, was with General
Sherman on his march to the sea. He was a member of Stephenson Post No. 30,
G.A.R. [Grand Army of the Republic] and of John R. Tanner Circle, Ladies of the
G.A.R. This latter organization will conduct a flag service at the home of his
sister, Mrs. Myers this afternoon previous to the regular funeral service.
Surviving are two brothers, John and Thomas Bucher of this city, and two
sisters, Mrs. Virginia E. Myers of Springfield and Mrs. G. W. Simpson of New
Berlin.
John Henry Bucher, third child of Moses Bucher and wife, Lydia, apparently did some traveling, as he did not always live in Island Grove Township in his adult life. He was married to a Haddie, last name unknown, who died before the 1910 Census. John Henry is listed on that census as a widower, and at the time, living with his sister, Athalinda Elton [Bucher] Simpson. John's occupation is listed as "Post Master." John died of Mitral insufficiency at Berlin, Illinois and was buried in the Berlin Cemetery. His wife's gravesite is unknown. John and Haddie had one child:
Nettie Bucher, b., d.
Moses Oscar Bucher, next child of Moses and Lydia Bucher, was born only eight months after his brother, John Henry. His middle initial has also been given as A., B., or S. Moses Oscar Bucher married Mary S. Skeen, born 19 December 1843, daughter of James Skeen and his wife, Lydia A. Moore. Moses enlisted August 1862 for three years in Company A., 106th Illinois Infantry. He died 17 September 1863 at Paducah, Kentucky, but was buried in the Berlin Cemetery in Sangamon Co., Illinois. His widow remarried to James Davenport, but she died on 26 April 1870. Moses and Mary had one child:
Mary O. Bucher, b., d.
Athalinda Elton Bucher, fifth child of Moses and Lydia Bucher, returned to Butler County, Ohio after the Civil War. It is believed she returned to Ohio to care for a sick relative, or possibly to renew her acquaintance with a young man she knew as a schoolmate years before when her family had resided there. This time while in Butler County, Ohio, Athalinda met her soon to be husband, George Washington Simpson, and after an appropriate courtship, the couple returned to Berlin, Illinois and were married 4 May 1870 by the Reverend Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton. Again, Athalinda and her new husband moved back to Ohio near Bethany, where their first child, Caroline Lydia Simpson was born in 1871. In early 1872 the family of three returned to Berlin, Illinois where their second child was born in December. In 1880 the family settled in Chrisman, Edgar County, Illinois where they operated a hotel for five years. But by 1885 the family had returned to Berlin.
George Washington Simpson, Athalinda's husband, was born 4 February 1841 near Monroe, Butler County, Ohio, the fourth son of the 5 sons, 3 daughters of Lansdale Simpson (1804-1895 and his wife, Lydia Boyd (1813-1906). Some of Lansdale Simpson's family removed to Edgar County, Illinois, at an early date. George was apparently working for one of his relatives there, when on 1 August 1862 at Paris, Illinois, he enlisted in Company D, 79th Illinois Volunteer Infantry for three years. George was wounded in the foot on 30 November 1864 at Franklin, Tennessee, and was honorably discharged at Camp Dennison, Ohio on 7 June 1865. He was described in his Civil War records as 5 feet, 11 inches; dark complexion; eye color - grey; and hair color - black. After the war he returned to his parent's farm in Butler County, Ohio.
George W. Simpson was a farmer all his life, except for the five years he spent operating the hotel in Chrisman. He and Athalinda were members of the Methodist Church, and George was a Republican. Athalinda was an expert seamstress and did sewing for many people in the Island Grove Township. She became known to many of her grandchildren and further descendants as "Muzzer" after a child's attempt to say mother. Her bachelor and widowed brothers lived with George and Athalinda for many years.
George Washington Simpson died 31 October 1921 at his home in Berlin, Illinois from chronic nephritis. After his death, "Muzzer", continued to live alone until 1923, when her home caught fire and burned to the ground. (Her granddaughter, Lydia "Elton" [Pond] Coy was eventually given a dresser, made of walnut, which was partially scorched by the fire before it was carried to safety. Elton gave the dresser to her daughter, Janice Meredith [Coy] Watson, who has since given it to her daughter, Kay Lynne [Watson] Epperson.)
After the fire Athalinda lived with her daughter and family, and her sons and their families. She died 30 September 1925 at Berlin, Illinois, age 80 years, 10 months, and 5 days. She was buried beside her husband in the Berlin Cemetery. George Washington Simpson and Athalinda "Muzzer" Elton Bucher Simpson had three children:
Caroline "Carrie" Lydia Simpson, b. 2/3/1871 Bethany, OH, d. 16/7/1959 Decatur, IL
Moses Lansdale "Dale" Simpson, b. 2/12/1872/3 Berlin, IL, d. 7/7/1960 Jacksonville, IL
Walter Boyd Simpson, b. 9/6/1879 Berlin, IL, d. 1953 Berlin, IL
Caroline or "Carrie" Simpson became a teacher, and also worked at the School for the Deaf at Jacksonville, Illinois. She taught for several years at Rochester, Illinois in a one-roomed house. While teaching, she heard one night at a local concert, a quartet of the Pond brothers singing and playing their instruments. She met Truman Catlin Pond, fell in love and was proposed marriage all in less than two weeks. Carrie parents were against the marriage, so the young couple eloped and were married in Rush Springs, Illinois on 31 August 1891 by Squire Brockhouse. Truman's brother, Frank J. Pond and his wife, Ida Belle, served as witnesses to the wedding. Truman C. Pond, known as T. C., was born 30 March 1870 near Concord, Illinois, the son of Carlo Pond (1829-1895) and his wife, Manilious Moore (1832-1908).
Once married, Truman and Carrie settled down to farming and raised six children, first in Berlin, Illinois, and later after 1910, in Meredosia, Morgan County, Illinois. The Ponds were members of the Meredosia Methodist Church. Truman died of heart failure while putting up hay in a field just north of Meredosia on 27 September 1930. He was buried in the Berlin Cemetery. Carrie continued to live in Meredosia, then later with her children, spending time with each of them. Eventually crippled by arthritis, she lived in the Anna B. Millikin Home for Women in Decatur, Illinois. Throughout her very confining illness, her mind remained alert, and she enjoyed visiting and entertaining her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. David K. Coy recalls visiting at age five the hospital where his "Grams" (as she was called by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren) was being cared for. Caroline Lydia Simpson Pond died at age 88 and was buried next to her husband and infant son in the Berlin Cemetery. Her obituary can be found in the "Decatur Herald and Review" after 16 July 1959. Mentioned are her children, "Mrs. Nita Irving and Mrs. Carolyn Mosley, both of Decatur, two sons, Boyd Pond, Tuscola, and George D. Pond, Peoria; a brother, M. L. Simpson, Berlin, Illinois, nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Two sons, a daughter, and one brother preceded her in death."

Millie was born 28 July 1876 in Illinois, a daughter of Thomas Davis and his wife, Betsy (Farley) Davis. Millie died at their home in Berlin, Illinois on 1 June 1947, at the age of 70 years after a long illness. "Dale" died at the age of 87 years in Jacksonville, Illinois. Both Dale and Millie were buried in the Berlin Cemetery. Millie's obituary in the "New Berlin Bee" for Thursday 5 June 1947, mentions her membership in the Island Grove Methodist Church, her husband, four daughters and five sons. The "New Berlin Bee" for Thursday, 14 July 1960 gives Moses Lansdale Simpson's obituary.
