The engine that set the world on fire!
The Ford FE (Ford/Edsel) engine started life in 1958 as a 332 cubic inch
engine designed to replace the ? in the ? It was produced in displacements
of 332/352/360/361/390/406/410/427/428 and remained in production until
1976. There's been some discussion on a couple forums I read as to
whether the 361 Edsel was an FE. According to Steve Christ's, "How
to Rebuild Your Big-Block Ford" it is definitely an FE. It had the
same 4.05" bore as the 360/390/410 and was the first to use that bore.
It also used the short stroke, 3.5", 352 crank. Ford later
produced this same engine as the 360 and put it in pickups. Why the
different C.I. designation, I'll never know. This is not the same
engine as the FT 361, which is different altogether.
I have owned an FE powered car or truck since 1978 and plan on building
a very stout (90% race, 10% street) 410 for my '67 Comet 2dr sedan.
It should be a very nice sleeper!
