DEFINITIONS

(Does it mean what you think it means?)

Pedantic and a nuisance maybe, but if the words we use don't mean the same things to each of us, we won't be truly communicating, and much of our discourse will be at best useless blather and at worst downright antagonistic. Please imbibe these definitions before going too much further into this.
(You may or may not find these same definitions in whatever version of a dictionary you might look at. Decide for yourself who the dummy is - your dictionary writer or me).

EGO

INDIVIDUAL EGO - The sense of "I"; "Me", as compared with and distinguished from "You" and "Others"; the sense of individual, individuated, unique and isolated "self" as compared with and distinguished from all that is not "self".

SOCIAL EGO - "We" as compared with and distinguished from "You" (plural); "Us" as compared with and distinguished from "Them" and "They" and "Others" (such "others" as the 'Rabble' or the 'foreigners' or the 'natives' or - well, you know - the 'wrong' ones - dumber than us).

(For an in-depth discussion of this, see "Conceit of Self" in "The Great Swindle")

ESSE

The Greater Being, spiritual and corporeal, as a Unity, which consists of the totality of its parts, and to which each individual part directly belongs;
Higher or Greater Power or Whole; Supreme Being; First Cause; Prime Mover Unmoved; in their broadest and fully non-particularized sense, God or Allah or Buddha or Krishna or Lord, etc.
(Each of these definitions is an approximation. All of them taken together is still an approximation. They all point in the desired direction, but none, nor all of them, is the full actuality of what is being pointed at.
ESSE is the illimitable and not fully knowable quality underlying all existence, and no definition or description can be fully accurate. Any definition or description, including those herein, is to be taken as a symbolic hint rather than as a literal accuracy).

FACT

FACT - That which is fully true, correct, and accurate (whether one KNOWS it or not).
That which can be demonstrably proven by way of science.

"fact" - That which may or may not be fully true, correct, and accurate (more likely not), but which is assumed and believed to be so ("knowledge" as distinguished from KNOWLEDGE).

(For an in-depth discussion of this, see The Great Swindle).

GOD

That which (hopefully and ideally) underlies and transcends Ego (both individual and social), and somehow makes some sense out of, and justifies, all the (quite apparent and undeniable) contradictions, injustices and just general dumbness generated not only by Ego but by a few jillion other things about life totally beyond human comprehension (birth; death; accident; disease; geological and meteorological disturbances; etc; etc; etc)
Also see Esse.

KNOWLEDGE

Understanding, beliefs and assumptions about reality.

KNOW - Knowledge based upon FACT.

"know" - Knowledge based upon "fact".

(For an in-depth discussion of this, see The Great Swindle).

MYSTICISM

The method by which Individual Ego reacts and rebels against the nonsense and restraints imposed by the religions of Social Ego.

REALITY

REAL (REALITY) - That which is FACTUAL.

"real" ("reality") - That which is "factual"; not FACTUAL.

RELIGION

A common belief system based upon "fact" (not FACT), which binds the co-believers into a somewhat coherent group of mutual identity and reinforcement.
All nominal and organized religions fit into this definition (e.g., Christianity, Buddhism, Scientology).
But so do many other groups which are less organized and make no claim to being religious -

1. Groups, formal or informal, based upon a common belief about political/social reality (Democrats, Republicans, Sociologists).

2. Groups, formal or informal, based upon a common belief about natural reality (Physicists, Anthropologists, UFO enthusiasts, etc.).

The term religion derives from the Latin term religare which means "to bind together". Social "binding together" is the function and purpose of religion.
Latter day accretions to the original definition of the term involving concepts such as "God" or "faith" or "spirituality" or "mysticism" are add-ons to the original definition which confuse the situation and muddy the waters.
The "mystical" and "spiritual" quality in religion is not because that is what religion is necessarily fundamentally about, but because shared concepts about those qualities just happen to be the best method for attaining religion's actual purpose - binding together. Shared beliefs about the mystical qualities of life is the most powerful of social glues.
Religion is the human social institution by which the Social Ego binds together (well, sort of, anyway) various individual Egos so as to form a "We" out of numerous "Me"s.

SCIENCE

That field of endeavor based upon the scientific method.

The scientific method consists of the following:

1. Make a guess (hopefully a reasonably intelligent one) as to how and why things work in this world. This is called an hypothesis.

2. Test the validity of that guess by way of actual, physical experimentation.
a. Don't cheat doing this. Either experiment confirms the hypothesis or it doesn't - or, as is more likely, some of each. Whatever, be honest and accurate as to the results.
b. Make sure others repeat the tests so as to avoid inadvertent error or bias on the part of any one individual.

3. Revise the hypothesis (make further guesses) according to the results of such testing.

4. If testing sufficiently proves the validity of the hypothesis, call it a theory (or even a law).

5. No matter how valid the theory or law seems to be, never (no never) assume that the issue has been settled for all time. Remember, all theories (and yes, even laws) are ultimately tentative, open to revision and further testing (starting back at step#1 above) as yet newer knowledge and experience develops.

If it isn't based upon this method, including step #5, please, oh please, let's not call it science (or scientific). The mere fact that something issues forth from a person with a PhD in a white coat in a laboratory doesn't in and of itself assure that what comes out is science. And, if it is rigorously based upon this method, even if it issues forth from a bedraggled long hair (or bald) crackpot in a leaky tent in the desert, it is science.

(For an in-depth discussion of this, see "Accepting Theory as 'fact'" in The Great Swindle).
