Subject: WinZip .cab file association From: "Loren Nelson" I installed Winzip which took over the extension for .cab files. This was fine, but after I uninstalled WinZip, there is no association for .cab and I can't use the cab file viewer. I figure I could manually do this, but I can't find an .exe file for the cab file viewer. How do I fix this? I'm using Win 98 SE. Thanks- Loren Nelson **************** From: "Dennis Langton" http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q195/8/34.ASP (attached) ******************* From: "Green Hornet" Join the club, here's the fix, courtesy of Alan Edwards, works great. Make up a file from the lines below. Copy into a file called fix.reg which should be created in Notepad. Do not retype, copy in case of errors. The 1st line in the file is the line REGEDIT4 Make sure your mail or news reader does not add any spaces to the end of a line. The last line must be blank. Doubleclick fix.reg -----copy below this line fix.reg------------ REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cab] @="CLSID\\{0CD7A5C0-9F37-11CE-AE65-08002B2E1262}" ; ---- end file above here ////////// Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems ****************** Unable to Display the Contents of Cabinet Files in Windows 98 //////////////// SYMPTOMS When you try to view the contents of a cabinet (.cab) file by double- clicking it, the .cab file may not open. Instead, the contents of a different folder may be displayed, a program may start, or nothing may happen. CAUSE This behavior can occur if the file association for .cab files in Windows 98 has been removed or is damaged. For example, this behavior can occur if you install and then uninstall WinZip 7.0. Uninstalling WinZip 7.0 removes the association for .cab files. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, re-create the file association for .cab files in Windows 98. To do so, use the following steps: Double-click My Computer, click Folder Options on the View menu, and then click the File Types tab. In the Registered File Types box, click Cabinet, and then click Edit. In the Actions box, click View, and then click Edit. In the Application Used To Perform Action box, type the following line: explorer.exe /root,{0CD7A5C0-9F37-11CE-AE65-08002B2E1262},%1 Click OK, click OK, and then click OK. Restart the computer to cause the new association to take effect.
