90. Thomas HERBERT The following information was provided in the GEDCOM file of RD White (RDWhite@aol.com):

Thomas Herbert was born in 1754 in NJ per Broderbund software. Spouse: Zelpha Murphy; Birth Year: 1753. The original source document is located in the Yates Publication's archive.

Thomas Herbert's Revolutionary War file contained one letter from John D Reed (Attorney of Law), Box 204 Greencastle Indiana in 1915: 'Thomas Harbert youngest son of Sir Richard Herbert of Monmouth. He died in Tippecanoe County, Indiana at the age of 92. Another letter was from a Grace Herbert, Libey Howe, Indiana, dated 24 Feb 1930, which stated that in Stillwell's Genealogy it gives the marriage of Thomas Herbert's father and mother as Deborah Lawrence and Richard Herbert (Vol III, page 405), also the fact that Thomas and his brother the oldest sons of Deborah Lawrence, received a legacy from their grandfather Lawrence in 1773.

Thomas, born 1753 in Monmouth Co. NJ, moved progressively west with the children, eventually being buried in Sherry Cemetery, near West Point, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana. Thomas was in the Revolutionary War (as a Private). He patrolled the beach at Sandy Hook, NJ.

Richard Harbert (brother of Thomas Jr.) married Catherine VanDorn, according to the Bible records from Indiana. He moved to Pennsylvania because land was being given to veterans of the war. He and his family moved to Greene Co., PA, in 1790. He moved to Pickaway Co., Ohio in 1804-1806. In the 1830's many of the Harbert's moved to Indiana. Thomas & Zelpha moved with Richard Harbert & Catherine Vandorne's family to Troy township, Fountain Co., Indiana, during that time. When Thomas died in 1844 he left an interesting list of estate; copy in the possession of markandgena@mpinet.net. Thomas Sr. was a tailor.

Thomas Harbert Sr. was born in Middletown Township, Monmouth County, NJ. They were not able to find his father because many Herbert/Harbert's lived in Monmouth County at that time. There are quite alot of records available on these Herberts, but none make a direct link to Thomas Sr. These New Jersey Herberts are most likely relatives of some sort. It is possible that there is no NJ connection and he came from NY or CT, or directly from England. There are also Virginia Harberts, at that time period.

Wayne L II @aol.com states that Thomas Harbert was born December 03, 1753 in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and died October 25, 1844 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He married ZILPAH MURPHY.

Notes for THOMAS HARBERT: Revolutionary War Pension application #R-4912:

"The State of Ohio, Pickaway Co. On this 26th day of October one thousand eight hundred and thirty-two personally appeared in Open Court, Thomas Harbert who is a resident of said County of Pickaway in the State of Ohio aged seventy-eight years on the 3rd of December 1831 who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832.

"That about two years before the battle of Lexington in April 1775 this affiant was a resident of the State of New Jersey. At that time there was a requisition (from whom served the affiant can not say) for a company of men to guard the coast of the Atlantic at Sandy Hook, and about 25 miles each way on the coast from that point. Affiant volunteered for the first month in that served under Henry Smock as Captain, Col Asher Holmes. The next month affiant was absent from the service by orders of an arrangement by the General that the other half should be called into service for a month, and those on duty discharged. Afffiant entered the service again as a Militia Man after a month absence, under Capt. Barne Smock, Col Asher Holmes, affiant was then to guard the same coast for two years in succession, during this time Affiant was not in any regular engagements, but was in more that fifty skirmishes with the tories and English in different places along the shore.

"After the expiration of the said service as a militia man, and was out every night from that time until the close of the Revolutionary War as a guard as Scout (as it was then called) except a few evenings when sick. Under the command of Capt. Stephen Flemming, Col Holmes still in command until 1783. the year 1790 (1807, he was in green Co., PA in 1790 and 1800) this affiant removed to the State of Ohio and has lived with in county and state 25 years this month. Affiant further states that he has no documentary evidence and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can produce who can testify to this performance of the service."

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Volume 115, states that Thomas Herbert (1754-1844) served as private under Captains Smock, Dennis and Fleming, Colonels Taylor and Holmes, Monmouth County, New Jersey militia. He was born in Monmouth County, N. J.; died in Tippecanoe County, Ind.

720. Walter HERBERT The following is from RD White's GEDCOM file. Walter Herbert was the grandson of William Herbert, the Earl of Pembroke, according to one source. Sir William Herbert was a knight who mustered 1800 Welshman during the War of Roses in 1469. The army was defeated, at the battle of Banbury. William and Richard Herbert were both taken prisoner and beheaded. William Herbert's oldest son, William, succeeded him and became the Earl of Huntingdon (according to Randi Robinson & Pete Huston). Pete's genealogy, 'One Will I Serve,' outlines the possibilities and Randi's research in Welsh medieval libraries corroborates much of what Pete wrote. Seems the Herberts invested in the American colonies, and the family sent representatives to NJ. They evidently arrived in NJ in the mid 1600's.

Origins of the Surname HARBERT/HERBERT (Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families 1620-1700, compiled by Frank R. Holmes. page cciii) 'Herbert/Harbert. From Saxon 'here', a soldier, and 'beorht', bright, famous in war.'

Rev George Warne Labaw, A Genealogy of the Warne Family in America, (Frank Allaben Genealogical Company. 1911), 'Electronic,' Page 263: 'The Herbert family is descended in unbroken succession from a line of Herberts who flourished in England during the dynasty of the Stuarts, whose antecedents at the period of the 'War of the Roses,' were ardent adherents of the House of Lancaster.'
