The Story of Henry Brown

Endnotes

1 Date of marriage from Family Record of Henry Brown, Henry Brown's Bible. Photocopy in the possession of Dale A. Brown, Ritzville, WA. Obtained from Margaret (Brown) Moore, Hermitage, PA, on 9 July 1987. According to Ms. Moore, one of Jacob Brown's brothers, possibly Aaron Brown, had the old family Bible (probably belonging to Daniel Braun). It was in German, and was given to Professor Kenneth Brown, of Manchester College in Indiana. Family historian Arlo Gump apparently had the Bible register translated into English.

4 The 1850 census enumerator, John J. Strother, was told, probably by her husband, that Catherine was born in Germany (1850 federal census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, at Seattle Public Library (SPL), M432, Roll 692, p.?, line 16). Jacob Brown, Catherine Keller's son, told the 1880 census enumerator that his mother was born in Germany (1880 federal census, Marion Township, Henry County, Ohio, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), T9, Roll 1032, ED 119, p. 5, line 35). But by the time of the 1900 census Jacob Brown apparently changed his mind and said that she was born in Holland (1900 federal census, Marion Township, Henry County, Ohio, NARA, T623, Rolls 1285-6, ED 23, sheet 7, line 19). To confuse matters further, Jacob Brown said that she was born in Holland when the 1910 census was taken; but the term "Holland" is followed in the census roll by "Ger." in parentheses (1910 federal census, Marion Township, Henry County, Ohio, NARA, T624, Roll 1198, ED 8, sheet 10, line 76). Ten years later Jacob Brown told the 1920 census enumerator, Frank E. Westrick, that his mother was born in Holland and that her mother tongue was Dutch (1920 federal census, Marion Township, Henry County, Ohio, NARA, T625, Roll 1398, ED 57, sheet 9, line 6).

5 Stark County Ohio Marriage Records, Vol. A., p.253, obtained from Genealogy Collections, Stark County District Library, Canton, Ohio. Photocopy of the original document is in the possession of Dale A. Brown, Ritzville, WA. Also see Early Marriages of Stark County, Ohio, 1809-1884, Alliance Genealogical Society, Alliance, Ohio, c 1986 (Vol. A., pg. 238, 253, and 278). The fact that George Hoke lived near Daniel Brown is based on the 1830 federal census, Nimishillen Township, Stark County, OH; M19, Roll 140, NARA.

7 Elizabeth (Houser) Brown died 24 Sept. 1854 at the age of 64 yrs, 9 months per Cemetery Records, Center Township, Williams County, Ohio, Brown Cemetery, p. 5 (Bryan: Williams County Genealogical Society, 1992).

8 Original Deed between Martin Houser and Daniel Brown, 8 May 1813; Stark County Ohio Land Records, p.168-169, FHL #9565005. This deed is dated four years after Daniel moved to Stark County. Daniel may have been working for his father-in-law or someone else, accumulating enough funds to make this purchase. Gump, Braun Family, states that Daniel Brown lived about two miles east of Louisville in Stark County. However, this location would have been in Section 26 or 27 of Nimishillen Township, about six miles south of Section One. Of course, Daniel Brown may have moved after purchasing his first piece of property.

This reference states that Martin Houser was born in 1756 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania; married Anna ___, and died 1840 in Harrisburg, OH. Harrisburg is in Section Two of Nimishillen Township, Stark County, OH, within a mile or two of the property that Martin Houser deeded to Daniel Brown.

14 Receipt from Stark County, signed by Henry Brown, photocopied by Arlo Gump. Photocopy in the possession of Dale Brown, Ritzville, WA. Thomas E. Ferguson, Ohio Lands: A Short History, Auditor of State, March 1991, p.27, states that Hancock County was organized in 1828, and began to function as a county as of that date. That Hancock County was sparsely populated in 1833 is indicated by the population figures from the county's 1830 federal census, as quoted in D.B. Beardsley, History of Hancock County, Republic Print Co., Springfield, OH, 1881, p.81. This source states that the 1830 population of Hancock County was only 813; cp C. R.
