Our 1956 Buick Super Riviera Hardtop, Model 53

Replacing Exterior Pot Metal & Trim

The pot metal on our Buick was in very poor shape when we got her. Sitting in the sun for so long had taken it's toll. We were not ready to have everything re plated so did what we thought was the next best thing. When ever we went someplace and had time we would look for places to stop to see if we could find any used pot metal in better shape than what we had. We even took a weekend once or twice just to look for parts. The hood scoop was very pitted, the plane had the tip of the wing broken off, and the badly pitted headlight trim were the worst and we located these first. The ones we found were not perfect but they were much better than the ones we had. Finally at one swap meet my wife located a rear trunk lid emblem, we ordered a new gasket for it and installed it. I think the hardest part to find was the "Super" script for the door, ours was broken and only had the "Sup".

The stainless trim was still in pretty nice shape with the exception of the passenger side sweep that goes over the rear wheel well. At some point in it's long life part of it had been crushed. We were able to find a NOS one on the internet.

A place south of Austin that we called had a 1956 Roadmaster for parts available. We made the trip down and were able to get a grill, the grill frame and some interior parts such as door handles. The grill frame was a good find as ours was dented.

With time and patience we were able to dress her up a bit without spending a lot of money.
