William P. MCKNIGHT, died October 27, 1826, at the age of 26 years.
GILLEAD CHURCH INSCRIPTIONS
Gillead Church is located some four or five miles North of the
Hopewell
Church on the Beattie’s Ford Road in the Northern part of
Mecklenburg County.
In the Sommerville "History of Hopewell", we are told
that the first pastor
was perhaps a Rev. John Botch, and that Rev. James MCKNIGHT (installed
in
1797) preached to this congregation for thirty-five years, at
the same time
serving CODDLE CREEK and HOPEWELL in S.C. Among the early Ruling
Elders of
GILLEAD are found the names of William Henderson, David Smith,
Hugh Lucas,
Gilbreath MCKNIGHT. There are many unmarked graves in the old
GILLEAD
CHURCHYARD. The following are among the inscriptions there at
this time:
