In 1880, Fredrich John Bartels purchased 200 acres,
which is the present town site of Crivitz,
Wisconsin. In 1883, he had
the 200 acres platted into a town site. The town site was officially
registered as Crivitz in the Marinette County Court House and named after his
birthplace in Germany.
In 1867, Fredrich Bartels married Louisa Hall.
They had twelve children and the first streets in Crivitz were named after the
children. You will still see those same names on the local street signs
today.
Crivitz, Germany,
located in northeast Germany,
was since World War II, under communist control. After the fall of the
Berlin Wall, many of the towns located behind the wall were adopted through
Sister City International, both internationally and by towns in Western Germany. Crivitz,
Germany, a small town, has
three Sister Cities, one in West Germany,
England and of course Crivitz, Wisconsin.
