3/09/03 Yes, it was COLDER BY THE LAKE,
but that didn't deter the U12's in Superior last weekend (particularly the -15
near-record temperature Sunday morning). After earning the second wildcard slot
in February, the Hurricane shut down Appleton for a scoreless regulation,
followed by a sweet goal in overtime by Kate. They became more confident after
dominating Fond du Lac, 3-1, putting Coulee Region in the U12 Championship game
for the second time in 5 years. The Wisconsin Wild, the other wildcard,
joined us for "the most impressive game of youth hockey" that the Superior
Scorekeeper had ever seen in his 15 years at the sport. It was a bit like the
tennis match TV commercials, up and back, and up and back... Saves were nearly
identical every period: the Wild goalies and our Becky stopped 16 shots per
team, but Kate's was the 17th shot that did the trick. In a game reminscent of
the CRGH U15's 2001 State Championship (9 overtimes), with 1:59 left in the
fifth overtime, we finally wore them down, but only after 74 minutes (12 + 12 +
12 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 6:01) of play-your-heart-out fan-cheering competition.
This really was an impressive tournament overall: Nine overtimes;
Saturday's games averaged a 1.9 goal difference, with most being just by a
single point; and, seven zero (shutout) games. Sunday's 7th place had the
Region 6 champs Menomonie over Mosinee 5-0; Consolation went to Superior after
they dominated Appleton 7-2; Third place found Kenosha beating Fond du Lac 1-0
in overtime. Cool!
