Next Meeting
The next meeting will be at the Nick Duerkop garage on Thursday, April 5th at 6:30 pm.
Our monthly meeting in Paul Thicke’s garage generated a very large gathering of members. There were 22 members and sprinkling of spouses. Julie Nelson, Events & Development Specialist, from Riverfront presented the club with an overview of “Sand on the Riverfront”, an event in August which this club will participate in as a car show to raise funds for Riverfront. We also welcomed onboard new member Dave Abott and his wife Dawn.

Here is a very interesting article that was in the last GM Classic Car Club Newsletter. Those members owning older cars should read this carefully.
TWO GM CLASSICS MEMBERS DOING RESEARCH ON OIL
John Torgerson and John Kellogg have been reading up on information pertaining to newer oils having less zinc. Zinc being an anti wear additive has led the auto manufacturers to convince the oil manufacturers that the quantity of zinc be reduced because the engines that have been manufactured in the last ten years have roller cam shafts which do not require as much anti friction (zinc) as the roller cam shaft engines of yesterday.
The reason auto manufacturers are asking for this reduction is because additives like zinc over a long period of time could plug up the catalytic converters and CO2 sensors. Members with cars older than 10 years which would have been manufactured with flat tapped cam shafts could run into premature cam shaft and lifter wear do to reduction of additives like zinc.
As many of you know the service rating of motor oil is indicated by numerous letters normally found on the oil container. “Car Craft Magazine” and others are beginning to do articles to inform people who have older cars that they should be paying very close attention as to the type of oil they are using. Of the type of oil you have used in the past may require you to switch oil types or use additional additives.
John Togerson called Valvoline for further information and the gentlemen who he spoke with said the amount left in the current production oil of .01% was sufficient to protect our engines. After more investigating I found that amount was not enough. The original amount included was .3 to 1.5% to protect our cars. I again called Valvoline and this time the gentlemen agreed there could be damage incurred without a special additive.
John then contacted STP about this issue and here is the response he received from STP.
There is not a formula for how much to use, however, both the STP Oil Treatment and STP Oil Stabilizer both contain ZDDP. The STP Oil Treatment comes in a 15 ounce bottle and replaces about half a quart of oil. The oil treatment is thicker and contains about 4 times the amount of ZDDP as the oil use to contain. This product will add to the viscosity of your oil. The new STP Oil Stabilizer is a 10w30 weight and replaces a quart of oil. The stabilizer has about 6 times the amount of ZDDP. The amount of ZDDP in both products is proprietary information.

It only seems appropriate that I share these ideas with the club, given our winter conditions.
