Such a sailing classic! Exploring the California coast before the gold rush!
A best seller in its time, and still well known. The text is important for its influence on public policy concerning seamenʼs rights. The Dana name was influential from his great-grandfather, grandfather, and father, analogous to an early Kennedy clan, see Dana Point CA. The text has become difficult especially in areas where he describes the operation of various ships in painstaking detail that is little understood today. The book is of the time of Melville’s Moby Dick and probably influenced him. Charles Dickens is said to have looked favorably on the book. I would guess for itʼs social agenda.
The embedded nautical terminology begs to be made transparent to breath new life into the book. I provide un-embroidered simplification of the nautical language enabling the book to continue to speak for itself to modern nautically challenged audiences.
