Ship's log July 4, 1999

I want to talk to you
I want to tell you about this place
I only came because I could
I came to see it once and be done
To be done and go back to the home feeling of the warm waters of the South
The sailing days of charts, tide tables, raise, reef, lower, anchor, climb the mast - routines
I came to see it once and be done
And in Petersberg I found something I don't understand
I want to talk to you
I want to tell you about this place
Thomas Bay - devil stories, the cold breath from Baird Glacier, the cascading waterfall behind Spray Island
Tracy Arm - encircling ice flows and my god the blue ice
I want to talk to you. And then I met you. A warmth.
I want to tell you about this place. You know it.
The whale of Ice Strait.
Icy Passage, on the bow at sunset, watching rows of snowcapped mountains,
watching wind on the waves, watching purple sky, seeing the heart of this place.
I want to talk to you
I want to tell you about this place. You know it
South down Chatham Strait is the wrong way now
And I only came to see it once and be done
Now I am leaving something I cannot leave behind
'You're going the wrong way' from the voice inside
The sailing days of charts, tide tables, raise, reef lower, anchor - routines
A different tide has turned
I have a picture of you now - a warmth
I want to talk to you.
