BIOGRAPHY OF CHIEF L. COREY SLOAN |
I began my law enforcement career in January 1991 with the Stewartsville, Missouri Police Department. I graduated from the St. Joseph Law Enforcement Academy in June 1991. I became a Cameron Police Officer in July 1991. Also, in July 1991 I obtained my Missouri Paramedic license and continue to hold that licensure today.
I made a career move in March 1996 and accepted a position with the Missouri Division of Fire Safety, Office of the State Fire Marshal as a fire investigator. I was responsible for the investigations of fires, bombings and explosions in the northern half of Missouri. Often times, structure fires involve Methamphetamine laboratories. In April 2000 I was certified as a clandestine drug laboratory technician responsible for the dismantling and clean up of Methamphetamine labs.
In June of 2000 I obtained my Missouri Firefighter I and II certification. I also specialized in interview and interrogation and became certified as a Computer Voice Stress Analyst. My duties also included instructing area fire and law enforcement agencies in their respective disciplines as it related to criminal investigation and emergency response.
I returned to the Cameron Police Department as a patrolman in June 2001. In October 2002 I was assigned to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) NITRO Task Force. NITRO is a gun, drug and violent crime task force that works in 16 counties in northwest Missouri. I remained in this position until I became Chief on May 1, 2004 after Chief Hal Riddle retired after an exemplary 25+ year career with the Cameron Police Department. I am focused on continuing the teamwork tradition that Chief Riddle started. I feel that law enforcement is indeed a team effort and we cannot do it alone. I am proud of the relationship that the Cameron Police Department has with other emergency service agencies (law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services) in our area. I feel that this teamwork helps us respond to calls for service, solve crimes and handle emergencies that occur in northern Missouri.
I have specialized training in the following areas: death/homicide investigation, fire scene investigation, post blast investigations, incident response to terrorist bombings, crime scene photography, computer voice stress analysis, statement analysis, hazardous materials technician, Weapons of Mass Destruction crime scene processing and evidence recovery, violent crime-criminal profiling, hostage negotiations, emergency management, incident command, school violence and threat assessment, active shooter response, noise and flash diversionary device deployment, radiological/nuclear WMD incidents, interview and interrogation, disaster damage assessment, policy and procedure development, major case squad management training, command and control and insurance fraud investigations.
I hold an Associates of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Missouri Western State University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fire Science from Western Illinois University. I am currently the President of the Northwest Missouri Peace Officers Association and Chairman of the Region H Homeland Security Oversight Committee. I am also the appointed emergency management director and 911 coordinator for the City of Cameron.
